1. 개요

미국의 아티스트 프린스의 싱글이며 그의 6집 앨범 Purple Rain의 두 번째 싱글로 1984년 7월 18일에 발매되었다.

2. 상세

영화 퍼플 레인의 오프닝 곡으로 등장함과 동시에 영화 사운드트랙 Purple Rain의 오프닝 곡이다.

뉴웨이브 성향이 깃든 강렬한 하드 록 넘버로, 일렉트로 펑크 장르의 시발점이 된 곡이기도 하다. 이 곡에서 나오는 기타 솔로는 프린스의 기타 솔로 중에서 가장 유명한 솔로 중 하나인데, 프린스의 기타 연주 실력을 감상할 수 있다.

도입부에 나오는 장례식 추도사 분위기의 나레이션이 특이하다. 국내에서 라이센스를 받을 때 가사의 수위가 높다는 이유로 심의에 걸려서 잘려나갔다.

8. 여담

미네소타의 스포츠 팬들이 가장 듣고 싶어하는 노래이기도 한데, 프린스가 미네소타 출신이기 때문. 미네소타 바이킹스가 홈경기에서 터치다운을 성공하거나,[2] 미네소타 트윈스가 홈경기에서 홈런을 때리거나, 미네소타 와일드가 홈경기에서 승리를 하면 이 노래가 나온다.[3] 미네소타 팀버울브스도 경기 중간에 몇 번 틀어주기는 한다.

브루노 마스가 프린스 사후 열린 그래미 어워드 2017에 프린스 트리뷰트 쇼로 이 노래를 선곡했다. 프린스의 상징과도 같은 보라색 수트를 입은 브루노가 그의 상징을 본뜬 기타를 솔로 연주하는 장면이 백미. 리허설 버전/본 공연 버전. 3분 33초부터.

씽2의 오프닝을 장식했다. 조니, 미나, 군터, 로지타가 이상한 나라의 앨리스 컨셉으로 공연을 한다.
