관우는 서기 162~219년에 살았던 고대 중국 영웅입니다. 관우는 적국 통치자인 조조에게 포로로 잡힌 후에도 유비의 편에 서기 위해 돌아올 정도로 의형제이자 지휘관인 유비에게 평생 충성을 다했습니다. 포로로 잡혀 있던 중 관우는 조조의 부대에서 잠시 장군이 되어 적 통치자의 부대를 공격하라는 명을 받았는데, 관우는 직접 적장의 목을 벤 후 조조를 떠나 유비에게 돌아갔습니다.

Guan Yu was an ancient Chinese general who lived from 162-219 CE. The general remained fiercely loyal to his friend and commander Liu Bei throughout his life, returning to fight by his side even after being captured by the enemy leader Cao Cao. During his capture, Guan was briefly made a general in Cao Cao's army and sent against a rival ruler's forces. Guan personally beheaded the opposing commander and left to return to Liu Bei.
Guan’s reputation grew even further after his depiction in 'The Romance of the Three Kingdoms', a semi-historical novel written a thousand years after his death. The novel spoke of his many impressive feats, notably receiving arm surgery without anesthesia while simultaneously playing a game of Go. Some time after the release of the novel, Guan became worshipped by Daoists, Buddhists, and Confucianists alike. There are even supposedly shrines dedicated to the general in every Hong Kong police station.
