1. 켄터키의 렉싱턴

렉싱턴은 켄터키 주에 위치한 도시다. 렉싱턴이란 이름을 가진 도시 중에서 제일 유명하고 큰 도시인 덕분에 미국에서 렉싱턴이라고 하면 대부분 이곳을 의미한다.[1]
Best Places to Live in the U.S. 조사에서 매년 높은 순위에 랭크될 만큼 살기 좋은 도시로 평가된다.[2]
19세기에 도시가 건설되었고 교통 산업의 발전과 함께 담배 산업 역시 발달했다. 루이빌과 함께 켄터키 주의 대표 도시로 성장했으며, 루이빌 다음으로 큰 도시가 되었다.[3]
2022년 기준 인구 약 321,793명을 기록하고 있다. 1990년 225,366명, 2000년 261,189명, 2010년 295,803명으로 인구가 매년 증가하는 추세이다. 인근 지역 같은 생활권 도시까지 포함하는 metro 인구는 2022년 기준으로 517,916명이다.[4]
켄터키 주의 주도인 프랭크퍼트 바로 남쪽에 위치한 도시다. 휴스턴 애스트로스 산하 싱글A 마이너리그 팀인 렉싱턴 레전드의 홈도 렉싱턴이다.
렉싱턴은 켄터키 대학교 등 여러 대학이 위치하고 있다. 1865년 설립된 켄터키 대학교는 연구 중심의 주립대학이다. 켄터키 대학교는 총 22,136명의 학부생이 등록된 대규모 종합대학교로서 켄터키 주 내에서 가장 많은 학생들이 재학 중이며, 켄터키 주의 대다수 고등학생들이 켄터키 대학교 진학을 희망할 정도로 명성과 인기가 높은 대학교이다.
2. 매사추세츠의 렉싱턴
미국 동부의 매사추세츠 주에 위치한 지역으로 2007년 기준 인구 3만명 정도의 작은 마을(Town, 우리나라의 동, 읍 정도)이다. 보스턴 북부에 위치하고 있으며 지명의 유래는 영국 잉글랜드에 있는 렉싱턴(현재는 렉스턴)이다.행정구역으로 큰 도시는 아니지만 미국 독립전쟁의 첫 전투인 렉싱턴-콩코드 전투가 벌어진 곳이라 미국 역사에서는 매우 유명한 곳이다.[5] 오래된 곳인 만큼 여러 유적이 많은 편이다.
무라카미 하루키의 단편 '렉싱턴의 유령'의 배경이 되는 곳이다.
여담으로 렉싱턴이 속한 카운티(우리나라의 군 정도)의 이름이 물경 "Middlesex"다. 당연히 엄한 뜻은 아니고 영국의 동명의 지역 이름을 따온 것이며 Middleseaxon이란 어원을 가진 것으로 중부 색슨 족의 영토란 뜻에서 붙여진 이름이다. 에식스, 서식스, 웨섹스 역시 각각 동, 남, 서의 방위 + 색슨 족에서 온 지명이다.
3. 미주리의 렉싱턴
미주리 주에도 렉싱턴이 있다. 인구는 2018년 기준으로 4,500명 정도이다. 2번 항목의 켄터키 주에 있는 사람들이 많이 이주해오면서 이런 이름이 붙었다. 1823년 라파예트 카운티의 중심지가 되었다. 미국 독립전쟁이 아닌, 미 북부/남부가 박터지게 싸운 남북 전쟁 당시 벌어진 "렉싱턴 전투"의 배경이 이 지역이다.4. 사우스캐롤라이나의 렉싱턴
그리고 사우스캐롤라이나 주에도 렉싱턴이 있다. 인구 9천명 정도의 작은 지역이다. 여기도 1번 항목의 매사추세츠 주 렉싱턴에서의 전투를 기념하여 1785년 색스 고다(Saxe Gotha)에서 렉싱턴으로 개명했다. "렉싱턴 카운티"의 중심지다.이외에도 노스캐롤라이나, 버지니아, 캔자스 , 오하이오 등에도 렉싱턴이 있다.
