IMAX 전용 카메라로 촬영된 영화는 다른 영화보다 세로 화면비가 길다. 업계 표준으로 자리잡은 DCP는 2.39:1 비율, 최근 비중이 늘어나기 시작하지만, 반면 4DX에서는 시네마스코프비율[2]로 상영하므로 아쉬운 화면이지만 IMAX GT급 상영관에서 상영하는 영화는 최대 1.43:1 화면비로 상영하기 때문에 스크린의 세로 길이 면에서 몰입감이 남다르다.

비용 문제로 IMAX 카메라로 촬영하는 영화가 많지 않고 대한민국에서 1.43:1 상영이 가능한 상영관은 CGV 용산아이파크몰 IMAX 밖에 없지만, 반대로 다른 영화관에서는 1.43:1 화면비로 영화를 즐길 수 없기에 이러한 영화는 한정적인 IMAX 상영관의 수요가 폭등하는 구조이다. 또한 IMAX는 영화사들과 계약을 맺어 IMAX 인증 디지털 카메라 또는 일반 디지털 카메라로 촬영한 영화를 IMAX관 독점으로 확장 비율을 제공하기도 한다.

또한, 디지털 시네마 이니셔티브에서 정한 DCP의 컨테이너는 Flat, Scope, Full[3]이 있는데, 이 중 1.90:1 비율인 Full 비율은 IMAX만이 좌우 필러박스 없는 영사를 독점한다.[4]

2.2. 넓은 스크린 크기

IMAX 영화관은 넓은 화면비와 뛰어난 화질 등의 장점과 함께 스크린 크기도 일반적인 영화관보다 월등히 넓다. 그 예로 각각 국내 최고의 돌비 및 아이맥스 상영관이라 평가받는 남양주 돌비와 용산 아이맥스의 스크린 넓이 차이는 최소 2배 이상이라고 추정된다. 일반관을 IMAX관으로 개조한 경우가 아닌 처음부터 IMAX관을 염두에 두고 공사한 상영관들의 경우 다른 상영관들에 비해 명백히 큰 스크린을 마주할 수 있다.

영화관의 장점 중 하나인 큰 스크린이 가져다 주는 몰입감을 극대화한 덕분에, 웅장한 분위기를 주는 영화는 그 분위기에 압도되기 위해 IMAX 상영관을 선택하는 비중이 늘어난다. 그 예로 듄: 파트 2는 작중 액션신 등의 박진감 넘치는 장면은 거의 없지만 장엄한 세계관과 분위기를 영화 전체에 걸쳐 담아낸 데다 1.43:1 화면비까지 지원하기 때문에 당대 최고의 IMAX 성과라는 찬사를 들었다.

3. 4DX의 장점

3.1. 다양한 모션 효과 및 환경효과

4DX는 IMAX와는 또 다른 느낌으로 몰입시켜준다. 4DX는 4차원 영화 시스템으로 Roll, Pitch, Heave, Sway & Twist[5], Tickler, Vibration와 같은 모션효과와 Warm Air, Fog, Bubbles, Rainstorm, Rain, Snow, Strobe, Wind, Scents, Water, Face Air같은 환경효과들이 있다.

3.2. ULTRA 4DX

SCREENX와 4DX를 결합한 플랫폼이 존재한다.

4DX 상영관에 정면(가운데), 좌(왼쪽), 우(오른쪽)의 벽면을 스크린으로 이용하는 3면 상영관인 SCREENX와 4DX를 합한 상영관이다. 4DX뿐 아니라 SCREENX로도 상영하는 영화는 이 타입으로 상영될 수 있다.

IMAX와 비슷한 수준으로 몰입되며 공간감이 좋다.
