Gas Carrier. 액화 암모니아, LPG, 에틸렌, 염소가스 등을 운송하는 배이다.
엄밀히 말하자면 LNG선도 가스 운반선에 속하지만 그 중요성 때문에 보통 LNG운반선을 가리킬 때에는 LNG운반선이라고 언급을 하는 편이다.
1. 분류
1.1. LPG운반선
LPG(Liquidfied Petroleum Gas)선은 크게 여러 가지 종류로 나뉘는데, PS(Pressurized Ship-상온가압상태 운반 소규모 가스선)/ SP(Semi-Pressurized Ship-저온저압상태 운반)/ FIFR(Fully Insulated Full Refrigerated Ship-저온대기압상태 운반 대규모 가스선)으로 크게 나뉜다. 가압식 운반을 할 경우에는 운항하는 해역에 따라 압력을 달리 해야 한다. 이는 해역의 온도에 따라 부피가 달라지기 때문인데, 보통 온대 지역을 항해할 경우에는 8bar 정도면 되지만, 열대 지역에서 항해할 경우에는 15bar까지 가압해야 한다. 또, 저온식 운반선인 FIFR선은 섭씨 -42도 정도에서 운반하는데, 이는 LPG가 프로판 가스와 부탄가스의 혼합체이며, 프로판 가스의 끓는점이 -42도이기 때문이다.1.2. LNG(Liquidfied Natural Gas)선은 천연가스를 액화한 것을 운반하는 배다. 위 사진의 선박은 멤브레인형[1] LNG선이다.
LNG를 극저온 상태로 냉동시켜 액체 상태로 운반하는 선박으로, 크게 달걀모양 탱크를 지닌 '모스(Moss)' 방식과 일반 벌크선처럼 생겼으나 상갑 중앙부가 사다리꼴 상자처럼 올라온 '멤브레인(Membrane)'방식으로 나뉜다. LNG는 끓는점이 낮고 휘발성도 높아 폭발 사고와 같은 위험을 안고 있는 선종이다.[2] 이놈의 위험성 때문에 국제해사기구[3]에서는 LNG 운반선에서 일정 반경 떨어진 해역에서 다른 선박이 접근하지 못하게 하는 규정을 정했다.[4] 여러모로 신경 쓸 부분이 있는 선종이다. 실제로 해양 플랜트, 이지스함, 크루즈, 유조선과 함께 가장 만들기 까다롭기로 유명한 선종이다. LNG 가스를 무려 약 -170도 정도의 초저온 액체 상태로 운반해야 하는데, 이러한 조건이 굉장히 까다로운 기술을 요구하기 때문이다. 긴 항해기간동안 그 거대한 가스탱크 내부를 일정하게 초저온 상태를 유지해야 하기 때문이다. 그래서 설계도대로 LNG선을 건조하려면 로이드 선급협회[5]의 승인을 받아야한다.
하지만 LNG 계열 운반선은 근무 환경이 매우 좋은 것으로 해기사들로부터 정평이 나, 상선사관 후보생들의 선호 선종이다.[6] 우선 LNG 운반선은 다른 선종과는 달리 연료유, 즉 중유만을 태워 운항하지 않고, LNG 탱크 안에서 기화되는 가스[7]를 가져다 연료로 쓸 수 있다. 이로 인해 기관 관리가 편해 기관계열 해기사들로부터 선호받는 선종이다. 휴식시간도 많이 있고 시설도 좋다고 한다. 대체로 선령이 짧아 유지보수에 손이 덜 들어간다는 것은 덤. 또한 LNG선은 그 위험성 때문에 봉급이 매우 세 1등 항해사/기관사 기준 1억 초반대에 달하는 무시무시한 연봉을 받는데, 1등 항해사/기관사가 되는 나이가 보통 20대 중후반임을 감안하자면 봉급이 세기로 유명한 해운업계에서도 상당한 수준의 대우라고 할 수 있다. 이밖에도 우리나라에 들어오는 LNG 가스는 한국가스공사에서 전량 수입하는데, 이때 공사 측에서 위험수당을 주기도 한다. 다만 경험을 쌓기에는 부족하다는 평이 있기도 하다. 당연히 선박 내에서는 절대 금연이다.
이런 LNG 운반선은 배를 설계하고 건조하는 데 높은 기술이 요구되어 현재 전 세계 LNG 선 발주물량의 70-80%가량을 한국의 조선업계가 수주하여 한국 조선업의 효자 역할을 하고있다. 통상 한 척당 2400억 원가량으로 배의 가격도 비싼 편이다. 다만 이런 LNG 화물칸 설계기술은 해외(노르웨이와 프랑스)에 라이센스로 척당 100억 원가량의 로열티를 지불하고 있다. LNG 선 건조 시 건조 이익이 보통 선가의 10% 정도인데 그 절반인 4~5%가량을 로열티로 지급하는 셈으로 한국 전체로 연간 5000억 원가량을 로열티로 지출하고 있다. 그래서 로열티 절약을 위해 한국산 화물칸 기술을 개발하고 있으나 실패를 겪는 등 LNG탱크 설계기술의 국산화는 아직 갈 길이 멀다.
1.2.1. 대한민국의 LNG운반선
1.2.1.1. 현황
대한민국은 당연히 LNG의 전량을 해외에서 조달하고, 따라서 LNG운반선의 역할이 에너지 안보상 매우 중요하다. 대한민국 전력의 25% 이상을 LNG를 이용한 가스발전이 담당하고 있다. 그래서 당연히 LNG운반선을 통해 가스를 조달하는 업체는 전체 수입량의 75%를 차지하는 한국가스공사 외에는 발전사 아니면 산업용 가스를 이용하는 업체이다.2024년 기준 한국가스공사는 주로 카타르 등 중동(38%), 오세아니아(23%) 등지에서 LNG를 운반해 오며 민간업체들은 동남아시아(43%) 조달 물량이 많은 편이다.#
기본적으로 석유와 비슷하게 중동의 점유율이 높다보니 이스라엘-미국의 이란 공습 등 지정학적 리스크가 발생할 때 위험이 커지는 편이며, 위에 서술된 바와 같이 기초적인 선박 운용의 난이도도 높고 준 전략자원 취급받는 LNG 특성상 분쟁국의 경우 해상 표적이 되는 경우도 잦다.[8] LNG선의 봉급이 높은 것이 단순히 LNG선이 업무가 복잡하기 때문만이 아니라는 것.
1.2.1.2. 선사
