뱀과에 속하는 뱀 중 하나인 먹구렁이
뱀목 뱀과에 속하는 뱀들을 말하며 콜루브리드라고도 한다.

2. 특징

에오세 후기에 처음 나타난 계통으로 추정되며 뱀 중 가장 종류가 많다. 왕쥐잡이뱀과 인디고뱀, 옥수수뱀 등 애완용 뱀들 다수도 뱀과에 속하며 국내의 구렁이, 능구렁이, 실뱀, 비바리뱀, 세줄무늬뱀, 누룩뱀, 무자치도 뱀과에 속한다. 남극 대륙을 제외한 모든 대륙에 분포한다.

뱀과에 속한 뱀은 위턱 앞쪽에 이빨이 없고 아래턱에 관절이 없다. 폐와 경동맥은 좌측에만 있다.[1] 대부분의 뱀과 뱀은 난생이다.

2.1. 분류

​과거에는 전 세계 뱀의 약 2/3가량이 뱀과(Colubridae)에 들어가 있었는데, 2000년대 이후 DNA 분석 기술이 발달하면서, 기존의 '뱀과'가 사실은 서로 유전적으로 꽤 차이가 큰 여러 그룹이 섞여 있다는 것이 밝혀졌다. 그리고 그 분기가 오히려 코브라상과(Elapoidea)와 큰 차이가 없다는 점이 밝혀졌다. 그래서 학자들은 기존의 거대한 뱀과(Colubridea)에서 ​딥사스과(Dipsadidae)와 유혈목이과(Natricidae)를 분리해 승격시켰고, 코브라상과(Elapoidea)는 오히려 이들과 비슷한 분기로 조정되었다. 이 4개 과를 묶는 '뱀상과(Colubroidea)'의 계통군 위치가 어디인지는 2026년 현재에도 논쟁중이다.

최신 연구(Zheng & Wiens 2016)에 따라 뱀과(Colubridea)에서 '유혈목이과(Natricidae)', '북미뱀과(Dipsadidae)'가 분리되었다. 또한 다른 연구 (Weinell 2024, cobras와 그 친척들에 대한 대규모 유전체 분석)에 따르면 코브라상과(Elapoidea)가 뱀과(Colubridea)와 함께 묶이게 된다. 코브라와 그 친척들은 뱀과(Colubridae) 무리와는 아주 오래전(약 5,000만 년 전)에 갈라져 나왔으며, 2024년 Weinell 등의 연구(cobras와 그 친척들에 대한 대규모 유전체 분석)에 따르면 이 4개 과 중 코브라상과(Elapoidea)와 뱀과(Colubridea)가 가깝다고 하며, ​Zaher et al. (2019) / Burbrink (2020)의 입장은 딥사스-유혈목이-뱀과 가 그대로 뱀상과(Colubroidea)로 묶여야 한다는 것. 뭐가됐든 기존 뱀과가 뱀과(Colubridea), ​딥사스과/북미뱀과(Dipsadidae), 유혈목이과(Natricidae)로 나뉘었고 코브라상과(Elapoidea)가 이들과 함께 묶인다는 것은 분명하다.

Figueroa (2016): Colubridae 내부는 아래 네 덩어리로 나뉜다. 여기서 (3)을 보면 아프리카물뱀아과 + 난쟁이굴뱀아과를 근연한 분기점의 중간분기 계통군으로 보고있다. 또한 (4)의 아시아덩굴뱀아과+뱀아과는 최종 자매계통군이다.

​Zaher (2019) : 비바리뱀아과, 대나무뱀아과를 기저에 남기고 그다음 '아프리카물뱀아과 + 난쟁이굴뱀아과'를 중간분기로 동일하게 묶어두었다. 마지막에 '아시아덩굴뱀아과+뱀아과'를 최종 자매계통군으로 남긴 것도 동일하다.

2.2. 독

뱀과에 속하는 뱀들은 독을 발달시키기보다는 환경 적응을 우선시하는 쪽으로 진화했기 때문에 대부분 독이 없지만 예외적으로 붐슬랭, 유혈목이, 돼지코뱀, 맹그로브뱀 등 고양이뱀속 등은 독이 있다. 기본적으로 뱀과라는 계통이 코브라상과와 가깝기 때문. 독을 발달시키는 것보다는 다양하게 환경에 적응하는 방향으로 진화하였지만, 개중에 코브라처럼 독에 특화된 종들도 있다.

즉효성이 낮은 출혈독을 사용하는 종이 많으며 독의 위력은 약한 경우가 많지만, 붐슬랭이나 유혈목이처럼 일부 종은 웬만한 코브라과 독사보다 강한 치명적인 독을 가지고 있다.[2]

살무사과나 코브라과의 독니가 앞쪽에 나 있는 것과 대조적으로,[3] 뱀과에 속하는 독사들은 입 안쪽 어금니 위치에 가늘고 긴 독니가 윗턱에서 뒷쪽으로 굽어 나 있어서 먹이를 입에 깊숙히 넣어야 독을 주입할 수 있다. 한국의 유혈목이의 경우에도 동일하게 깊게 물릴 때 위험하며 입 앞쪽으로 물릴 때는 대체로 독이 제대로 주입되지 않는다.
