1. 개요

유압(油壓, hydraulics)이란, 비압축성 액체를 펌프 등으로 압출하였을 때의 토출 압력과 이를 응용한 기술을 말한다. 유압이라고 쓴 이유는 여기에 쓰이는 액체(유압액)로 대부분 기름을 쓰기 때문이다. 영단어는 '물'과 관련한 단어라 어리둥절할 텐데, 과거에는 정말로 물을 사용했던 것의 흔적이다.[1] 이는 파스칼의 원리를 따른다.

2. 특성

원동기 동력보다 강한 힘을 얻을 수 있다.
일반적인 기계적 변속기보다 속도를 자유롭게 조정할 수 있다.
과부하 상황에서의 안전장치를 간단히 할 수 있으며, 이로 인해 과부하 상태에서의 안정성이 뛰어나다.
동력원과 작동 장치의 배치가 자유롭다.
공압과는 달리 압력을 전달하는 액체가 유출되지 않는다. 따라서 귀환관이 존재하는 경우도 있다.[2]
온도가 높게 올라가면 유압유가 끓어오르면서 기포가 생겨 성능이 저하되는 단점을 가진다.[3]
유체는 압축될 수 있으므로 유압관이 길어질수록 압축 탄성에 의해 동력 전달에 지연이 생길 수 있다. 다만 밀도가 공기보다 크기 때문에, 공압식보단 적다.

단, 일반 승용차의 브레이크 등에 이용하는 유압은 펌프 없이 마스터 실린더의 피스톤을 누르는 힘으로 작동하며, 이 마스터 실린더가 펌프의 역할을 한다. 단 차량 브레이크는 진공 배력 장치를 통해 엔진 동력의 도움을 받을 수 있다.

4. 사용 분야

큰 기계의 제어부터 자전거 브레이크 같은 작은 크기까지 다양한 곳에 이용되고 있다.

자동차 - 주로 제동 장치 및 파워 스티어링에 이용하며,[4], 유체제어식 자동변속기(토크 컨버터), 속도 감응형 스포일러나 트렁크 개폐 장치같이 사람의 힘을 보조하는 곳에도 쓰이고 있다. 또한 수동 변속기 모터사이클은 클러치 레버의 조작감을 가볍게 만들기 위해 유압식 클러치를 사용하기도 한다 ~~정비를 잘못하면 클러치가 안 잡히는 참사가 난다.~~ 일부 차량의 경우 에어 서스펜션처럼 유기압 현가장치를 적용할 때 유압 기술이 쓰이기도 한다[5].
건설 기계를 비롯한 큰 힘이 필요한 산업현장의 기계류와 같이 과부하 상황이 수시로 생기는 기계에는 여전히 유압 작동이 주류를 이루고 있다.
각종 공작 기계
로봇 - 미국과 중국과 유럽에서는 로봇의 구동을 유압 회로에 의존하는 경우가 많다. 반면 한국과 일본은 전동기를 이용하는 경우가 대부분이다. 하지만 20세기 말엽에 들어서는 큰 힘이 필요하지 않은 경우 유압보다 취급과 제어가 쉽고[6] 효율이 더 높은 전기 제어를 사용하는 경우가 많아졌으며, 실제로 소형으로 분류되는 장비들은 전기/전자 제어로 전환되었다고 볼 수 있지만, 기존 방식의 익숙함과 신뢰성 덕분에 여전히 많이 쓰인다. 대표적인 경우가 항공기 조종 면을 움직이는 유압 계통이다.
자동차 자동 변속기나 산업용 기계 등에서의 동력 전달용[7] 말 그대로 제어가 아니라 동력만 전달하는 게 목적으로 유압 펌프가 동력을 발생시키면 기계에서 그 유압으로 프로펠러를 돌려서 동력을 얻는 방식이다.
항공기의 제어 계통 - 특히 대형 여객기 등의 조종 계통,[8] 랜딩 기어 [9]는 사람 힘으로 움직이는 것은 무리이므로, 유압을 이용하여 제어하는 것이 보통이다. 그래서 이 부분이 나가 유압액이 다 새면, 비행기는 핸들이 조종이 안 되는 자동차와 같은 상태가 된다. 때문에 일어난 사고가 대한항공 007편 격추 사건, 일본항공 123편 추락 사고, 유나이티드 항공 232편 착륙 사고, DHL기 미사일 피습 사건이다. 아제르바이잔 항공 8243편 추락 사건도 유압 계통 손상으로 추정된다. ATA(Air Transport Assosiation) chapter 상에서는 29번이다. 21세기 들어서는 기체의 대형화로 전자식으로 바뀌는 추세다. 자세한 것은 FBW 문서로. 다만 군용 전술기의 경우 피탄 시에도 신뢰성이 크기 때문에 A-10등 대공 포화가 많은 격전지에서 저공비행으로 운용되는 공격기는 아직까지 유압 계통과 강철 케이블을 사용하기도 한다. 전투기의 경우에는 날렵한 움직임이 더 중요하므로 FBW가 대세이다.
전차, 장갑차, 자주포 등 기갑차량의 포탑 및 주포 선회 계통 - 무장이 커지고 장갑이 두꺼워지면서 무거워진 기갑차량의 포탑과 주포를 사람의 힘으로 크랭크를 돌려가며 직접 선회하기는 힘들어서 유압을 사용한다.[10] 특히 유압식이 완전 전동식보다 신뢰성이 높으면서도 보조 엔진(APU)으로 직접 구동하는 것보다는 단순하여 오랫동안 포탑 선회로는 유압식 선회장치가 쓰였다. 그러나 중동전쟁 등을 통해서 평소에는 안정적이지만 가연성이던 유압액이 가열된 상태에서 피격시 손상으로 누출되어 차량 내에 화재를 일으켜서 심하면 탄약 유폭으로 이어지는 결함이 발견되어 유압액을 더 둔감한 불연성 물질로 바꾸게 되었고, 이후 전동 모터 기술이 발전하자 유압-전동식 또는 완전 전동식으로 갈아타는 경우도 많아졌다. 군함들도 비슷한 방식을 쓴다.
무선 모형(?) - 몇몇 무선 조종 모형 중 현실성을 위해 유압을 이용하는 경우도 있다. 예를 들면 포크레인, 불도저 모형 등은 보통 작은 서보 모터를 이용해서 움직이지만 유압 모터랑 유압유 (!)를 넣어서 작동시키는 모형도 있다. 물론 유압식 무선 모형은 가격이 백만을 넘어가고 소음도 꽤 있으니 현실성까지 신경 쓰는 중증 덕후(...)가 아닌 이상 전동식이 정신 건강에 이롭다.
유압잭 - 수동 펌프와 구슬로 간단하게 되어 있으나 원리는 같다. 해당 문서로.

유압 프레스 - 유압잭을 응용한 분야로 전기 모터나 공압 대비 강한 토크를 줄 수 있는 유체의 특성을 이용한 압착 성형 기계이다.

[1] 주변에서 구할 수 있는 물은 전해질이 용해되어 금속으로 이루어진 기계를 부식시키거나 전기회로에 쇼트를 일으키는 등 누출시 문제를 일으킬 소지가 크므로 물을 다루는 기계는 방수 처리가 필수다. 게다가 물은 기름이나 여타 액체에 비해 어는점이 높고, 끓는점은 낮다. 따라서 쉽게 증발하는건 물론 겨울철이나 고온의 환경에서 수압 라인이 터지는 경우가 발생할 수 있다. 이러한 이유 때문에 현대에는 실린더에 물 대신 기름(혹은 유사한 물성을 지닌 액체 물질)을 넣는다.[2] 공압은 힘을 가하는 데 사용한 압축 공기가 그대로 외부로 배출된다. 버스나 트럭에서 나오는 '푸쉬익-' 하는 소리가 바로 이것.[3] 40인승급 대형 버스나 5톤급 이상의 중대형 트럭과 같은 대형 차량의 제동 장치에 유압식이 아닌 공압식 브레이크를 사용하는 이유가 바로 이것이다.[4] 단, 대형 차량은 유압식이 아닌 공압식 제동 장치를 사용한다. 차량 질량이 큼에 따라 운동 에너지도 커서 브레이크에서 다량의 열이 발생하기 때문에, 베이퍼 록 현상이 일어나기 쉽기 때문. 대형 차량이 멈출 때 취익 하고 빠져나가는 소리가 바로 공기가 빠지는 소리다.[5] 이는 일반 승용차들에 쓰이기도 하지만 전차와 같은 무거운 궤도 차량에도 쓰인다.[6] 유압을 통해 관절을 빠르고 정확하게 가동하려면 유체의 온도, 밀도, 점도까지 계산에 넣어야 한다. 또한 압축 탄성에 의한 지연 시간도 서보 모터에 비하면 매우 크다.[7] 일정급 이상의 초대형 기계류는 약간 예외로, 전기 트랜스미션 구동이 더 효율적인 경우가 있다. 예를 들면 특대형 디젤 전기 기관차나 코마츠 930E 같은 적재 중량 300톤오버인 광산용 장비 등. 이들 분야는 기존에 유압을 이용하다가(흔히 '디젤 액압식'으로 알려진 변속기류), 엔진으로 발전기를 돌려 나온 전기로 모터를 굴려 바퀴를 구동한다. 930E는 엔진으로 발전기와 유압 펌프 둘 다 돌리지만 말이다. 동력용 전동기의 경우에도 기술의 발달로 제어 난이도가 줄어들었다. 사실 오래된 디젤 전기 기관차의 경우 정교한 제어 회로가 없어서 막 몰았다가는 고장 난다.[8] 플랩과 슬랫은 ATA 27(조종 계통) 안에 ‘Flap/slat electronic unit’이 있는데 이걸로 움직인다.[9] 유압 상실로 인해 랜딩 기어가 자동으로 전개되지 않는다면 기어 도어의 잠금장치를 해체한 후 기어의 무게를 이용하면 내릴 수 있다.[10] 주포 상하가동은 여전히 수동식이었던 전차들도 대부분 포탑 선회에는 동력을 썼다. 물론 구동장치가 고장나는 상황도 대비하여 수동 선회로 전환하는 것도 가능하도록 설계한다.
