1. 개요
시리즈물이 3편에서 유독 부진한 경우를 일컫는 용어.[1]흔히 말하는 소포모어 징크스로서, 3편 징크스나 Three strike(쓰리 스트라이크)라고도 한다. 반대로 서양에는 Third(Three) time's a charm이라고 두 번 실패했어도 세 번째에는 꼭 성공한다는 의미의 3의 축복도 있다. 물론 이미 두 번이나 실패했다면 3편이 나올 확률은 매우 희박하다.
2. 원인 및 대표적 사례
생각보다 오래된 현상으로 시리즈물들이 유독 3편에서 고전하는 인상이 강한 경향이 많아서 일종의 징크스로 부르던 것이 그 시초다. 90년대에는 모 게임 잡지에 ‘왜 3편은 망하는가’라는 칼럼이 실릴 정도였다.3편이 부진한 가장 큰 원인은 여러 가지가 있다.
- 질려서
1편이나 2편에 비해서 별다른 차별점을 못 찾고 똑같은 스토리와 완성도로 작품을 만들면 소비자들 입장에선 1편과 2편에서 본 것을 또 봐야 해서 쉽게 질린다. 즉, 전혀 신선하지 않고 피로도만 쌓인다. 보통 두 번째까지는 스케일을 늘려서 차별화를 둘 수 있지만 세 번째는 어지간히 차별화에 성공하지 못하면 체감상 질릴 가능성이 1편과 2편보다도 당연히 크다.[2]
- 청사진이 없어서
일반적으론 1편이 공개되는 시점에서 2편까지 고려하는 경우가 많은데(특히 할리우드 영화)[3] 이럴 경우엔 미리 짜놓은 계획대로 1편에선 불판을 깔아놓고 2편에선 고기를 맛있게 구울 수 있다.
하지만 2편의 대박에 힘입어 3편이 기획될 경우엔 미리 계획해 놓은 청사진이 없는 상황에서 갑자기 새로 이야기를 추가해야 해 고기가 타 버리므로 기존 시리즈와 설정붕괴을 일으키거나 뇌절이 오기 쉽다. 특히 영화처럼 초거대 자본이 들어가는 경우엔 1편이 기획될 당시 2편의 제작비까지 투자를 모으는 경우는 많지만 3편까지 고려하고 제작비를 투자받을 수 있는 경우는 극히 드물다.[4]
- 1편과 2편이 너무 뛰어나서
크리에이터가 만들고 싶었던(하지만 예산 때문에 만들지 못했던) 작품을 1편의 성공에 힘입어 더 많은 예산과 더 숙련된 인력으로 제작하는 것이 2편이다.[5]
하지만 이미 소재와 역량을 최대치로 갈아넣은 2편이 공개된 시점에서 3편을 또 만들려고 하면 당연히 소재 고갈과 역량 과부하가 따라올 수밖에 없다. 만들기는 1편과 2편보다 어려운데 1편과 2편이 너무 뛰어나니 3편을 평작만큼만 만들어도 저평가당하는 경우도 많다.
- 결말을 제대로 수습하지 못해서
처음부터 3부작으로 설정한 트릴로지에서 이런 현상이 자주 나타난다. 극의 발단이 되는 1편과 전개와 절정이 되는 2편을 3편의 결말이 잘 마무리해야 하는 만큼 작품의 전개난이도가 엄청나게 올라간다. 이 부분을 조금만 잘못 건드리면 용두사미가 될 수 있기 때문에 더 신중을 기울여야 하며 극에서 풀어야 할 떡밥과 서사의 비중도 전작들에 비해서 훨씬 많다.[6]
가장 좋은 예시가 라이즈 오브 스카이워커인데 각본가는 "3편으로 모든 걸 마무짓는 건 힘들다. 4편까지 늘려서 부담을 줄이고 싶었다"는 얘기까지 했다.[7]
- 상업성 때문에
대작일수록 높으신 분의 간섭이 많아져 배가 산으로 가는 것도 있다. 특히 상업성을 위해 원작의 고증을 무시하고 제작사가 무단으로 설정을 만들어내며 작품을 막장스럽게 하는 경우가 많다. 배트맨 포에버와 스파이더맨 3이 대표적이다. 투자자 입장에선 1편과 2편보다 더 많은 돈을 벌 목적으로 돈을 준 것이기 때문에 이것저것 강제로 끼워넣는 등 작품에 직접 개입하고 싶어하는 경우가 많다.
이와 별개로 '3의 저주'가 현시대의 거대 게임 IP의 자본 규모의 태생적인 한계라는 지적도 있다. 후술하겠지만 그래서 1990년대 말과 2000년대 초에 제작된 게임들은 3의 저주를 피할 수 있었다고 한다.(#)
이 저주는 시장논리로 작용하는 법칙이 아니며 무수한 예외가 있다. 오히려 3편까지 나올 정도라면 기존 팬층의 수요도 두텁고 쌓아둔 인지도로 신규 소비자의 유입도 보장될 수 있다. 3편에서의 실수를 발판삼아 후속작(4편 등)이 더 크게 성공하는 경우도 드물지만 있으며 게임 쪽에는 특히 많다.[8][9]
3. 반례: 3의 축복
