미국의 전설적인 라틴 락 밴드 Santana가 1999년 6월 29일에 발매한 싱글이다. 얼터너티브 락 밴드 Matchbox Twenty의 리드 보컬이자 리더인 Rob Thomas가 피처링으로 참여했다. Rob Thomas가 노래를 부르고, 산타나는 연주를 했다.2. 상세
Maria Maria와 함께 1999년~2000년 사이의 라틴 음악 전성 시대를 상징하는 곡이며,[1] 동시에 산타나의 최전성기를 상징하는 곡이다. 동시에 1990년대와 20세기의 마지막, 2000년대와 21세기의 시작을 모두 대표하는 기념비적인 곡이기도 하다.머라이어 캐리와 JAY-Z의 "Heartbreaker"를 밀어내고 1999년 10월 넷째 주부터 2000년 1월 둘째 주까지 빌보드 핫 100에서 12주 연속 1위라는 대기록을 달성했다. 이 시점은 그 어떤 때보다도 미국 대중음악계가 복잡하던 시절이었지만,[2] 산타나는 이 곡 하나로 1958년~2018년 빌보드 핫 100 올타임 차트에서 2위에 오르는 등 대중음악 역사상 최고에 달하는 히트를 친다.[3]
이 곡 다음에 1위한 크리스티나 아길레라의 What a Girl Wants가 21세기 최초의 핫 100 1위 곡이라고 주장하는 사람들도 있다. 그러나 "새로운 곡 기준"으로 볼 땐 그렇고 실질적으로는 21세기의 첫 번째와 두 번째 주는 이 "Smooth"가 점령하고 있었다. 공식적으로는 21세기의 시작은 2001년이라 Smooth는 20세기의 마지막 초메가히트곡으로 한정 지을 수도 있으나, 영어 위키피디아에도 이 곡이 "1990년대와 20세기의 마지막 1위 곡인 동시에 2000년대와 21세기의 첫 1위 곡"이라고 서술되어 있다.
1999년 빌보드 핫 100 연말 차트에서는 19위를 기록했으며, 2000년 빌보드 핫 100 연말 차트에서는 2위를 기록했다. 빌보드 핫 100 1990년대 총결산 차트에서 41위, 빌보드 핫 100 2000년대 총결산 차트에서는 33위를 기록했다.
이 노래가 나온지 11년 뒤인 2010년 산타나와 롭 토마스는 다시 만나 전설의 명곡인 크림의 Sunshine of Your Love를 커버했다.
