1. 개요

미국의 자율주행 기술 개발 기업.

2. 상세

구글의 모기업 알파벳의 자회사 중 한 곳이며, 라이다(LIDAR) 기반 자율주행 자동차 기술 개발의 선두 주자로 평가된다.

현재 자율주행 자동차 구현을 위해서는 크게 2가지 방법이 있는데, 우선 카메라의 2차원 데이터를 수집하여 딥러닝을 통해 3차원 벡터 공간을 만들어 추론하는 컴퓨터 비전 구현 방식이다.[1] 두 번째는 라이다, 레이더 초음파센서 등 복합 데이터를 합성하여 고정밀 지도를 만들어 시뮬레이션하는 방식이며, 현재 대다수의 업체들이 이러한 방식을 택하고 있다. 그리고 웨이모는 이 고정밀 지도 기반 자율주행 기술 분야에서 선두를 달리고 있다.

2025년 현재 피닉스와 샌프란시스코, 로스앤젤레스, 애틀랜타, 오스틴(텍사스)에서 재규어 I-페이스, 아이오닉 5, 지커 RT(지커 믹스 베이스)를 이용해 로보택시를 시범 운영 중이다. 피닉스, 샌프란시스코, 로스앤젤레스에서는 자체 앱인 Waymo One으로 이용이 가능하고, 애틀랜타와 오스틴에서는 Uber를 통하여 이용 가능하다. 2026년에는 워싱턴 D.C.와 마이애미에서도 서비스를 개시할 계획이다.

3. 역사

2004년 결성된 세바스찬 스런의 스탠퍼드 대학교 자율주행 자동차 팀을 모태로 한다.
2007년 미국 국방고등연구계획국의 그랜드 챌린지에서 기계학습 기반 차량으로 우수한 성과를 낸 세바스찬 스런과 앤서니 레반도프스키의 팀을 영입했다.
2009년 1월 이들의 팀을 기반으로 구글 산하에 자율주행 자동차 프로젝트를 시작했다.
2016년 12월 법인으로 독립했다. 이 때까지 11억 달러 이상의 자금을 투입했다고 한다.[2]
2017년 4월 미국 애리조나 피닉스에서 자율주행 택시의 시범 서비스를 시작하였다.
2018년 12월 상업 자율 주행 서비스인 Waymo One을 피닉스 대도시 권역에서 시작하였다.
2020년 3월, 아랍에미리트의 국부펀드 운용사인 무바달라 투자 회사를 비롯하여 22억 달러 규모의 첫 외부투자를 받았다.
2020년 10월 운전석에 안전요원이 탑승하지 않은 완전 무인 자율주행 자동차 운행을 공식적으로 시작하였다. 운전석을 비워둔 채로 자율주행 자동차를 운행하는 것은 웨이모가 최초이다. 하지만 운전석에 사람이 없을 뿐이지 원격으로 사람이 모니터링하고 있다. 미국 애리조나주 피닉스 교외에서 완전 무인 자율주행 호출택시 서비스를 시작했으며, 이는 2019년 여름에 한정된 고객 수백 명을 대상으로 완전 무인 자율주행 자동차 서비스인 ‘얼리 라이더’ 프로그램을 시작한 지 1년여만이다. 공공도로에서 승객을 태우고 자율주행 자동차를 시험운행하기 시작한 때로부터 계산하면 5년 만이다. 이용 차량은 크라이슬러의 미니밴 퍼시피카를 개조한 것이다.
2020년, 연간 45억 달러의 손실을 낸 것으로 알려졌다.
2021년 4월 존 크래프칙 CEO가 사임을 했다. 사임 이유에 대해서는 공식적으로 밝히지 않았지만, 로보택시 상용화가 계속해서 미뤄지면서 적자 규모가 어마어마하게 증가한 것에 대해 책임을 지고 물러난 것으로 보인다.
2010년대부터 자사의 자율주행 차량이 운행하는 모습을 미디어에 꾸준히 노출시켜왔기 때문에 세간에는 웨이모가 사실상 완전 자율주행을 완성했지만 안정성을 높이고 라이다 등 장비 단가를 낮추기 위해 서비스 출시를 미루고 있다는 인식이 퍼져 있지만 실상은 좀 다르다. 2021년에 웨이모가 무인 택시를 시범 운행 중인 피닉스의 지역 신문에 웨이모의 무인 택시가 너무 자주 오작동을 일으켜 교통체증과 사고 가능성을 유발한다는 비판적인 기사가 실렸고, 웨이모 택시가 승객을 태우고 이동하던 중 공사 구간을 만나자 도로 한 복판에서 멈춰서는 일이 발생하기도 했다. 차 문이 잠겨서 승객은 차에서 내릴 수도 없었고, 웨이모 직원이 와서 차를 수동 운전할 때까지 도로 위에 갇혀 있어야 했다. 해당 승객인 JJRicks가 유튜버였기 때문에 이 사건은 영상으로 촬영돼서 공개되었다. 이런 사건들을 보면 웨이모가 자율주행을 상용화하지 않고 있는 1차적인 이유는 기술이 미완성되었기 때문인 것으로 추정된다.
2023년 3월 CNN에 따르면, 누적되는 적자와 미국 경기 둔화 영향으로 직원 8%를 해고했다고 한다.
2023년 8월, 경찰과 소방당국 반대에도 불구하고 샌프란시스코 내에서 크루즈와 더불어 24시간 로보택시 영업을 허가받았다. 기존에는 야간에만 운영이 가능했으나, 24시간으로 허가 시간이 늘어난 것이다. 현재 250대를 운행하고 있다.
2023년 10월 26일 애리조나 피닉스 한정으로 우버 앱을 통해 자사 로보택시를 호출할 수 있게 한다고 발표했다.#
2024년 1월 로스앤젤레스에도 로보택시 라이센스를 신청했다고 밝혔다.
2024년 3월 14일부터 로스앤젤레스에서 로보택시 서비스를 시작했다.
2024년 7월 모기업 알파벳이 50억 달러 추가 투자 계획을 밝혔다. 경쟁사들이 자율주행 관련 투자를 축소 및 연기하는 상황에서 이례적인 결정으로 관심을 모으고 있다.
2025년 6월 LA 시위의 격화로 로보택시 여러대가 파괴되는 일이 발생해 샌프란시스코 지역 서비스 운영을 선제적으로 중단했다. 로보택시들이 일자리를 파괴하는 테크 업계의 상징으로 여겨져 파괴되고 있다고 뉴욕 타임즈에서 전했다. #

4. 논란

2024년 2월 10일 샌프란시스코에서 폭도들에 의해 웨이모 차량 화재 사건이 발생했다. 위치는 샌프란시스코 차이나타운의 중심지인 잭슨 스트리트와 그랜트 에비뉴 교차점이다. 2월 10일 중국의 춘절이기 때문에 폭죽 행사가 상당한 날이다. 따라서 인근에 거주하고 있는 운전자 상당수는 이곳을 우회해서 운전하기 마련이지만, 자율주행 시스템은 이를 인지하지 못해서 발생한 사고라고 해석하는 입장도 있다.

2025년 12월 20일 오후 샌프란시스코 에 시 전체의 30% 에 전력 공급이 끊기는 대규모 정전 사태가 발생했는데 이 때 주행중이던 웨이모 차량들이 도로 한가운데 한꺼번에 멈춰버려 교통을 마비시켰다.

5. 기타

한국에서는 슛 포 러브 팀이 손흥민과의 촬영을 위해 2025년 9월에 LA FC를 방문하면서 웨이모 택시에 탑승했었다. 탑승한 출연자들 모두 '운전석이 비어있는데도 알아서 움직이는' 처음보는 광경에 무서워하면서도 신기해했고, 팁을 안내도 된다는 장점도 알려줬다. 정작 이 웨이모 택시를 추천한 사람은 우버 기사였다고.(...) ~~"기사님, 당신 직업 뺏는 애들 아니에요?" "상관없어요 개쩔어요! 꼭 타봐요!"~~#
