1. 개요

Unofficial Skyrim Patch 및 팀장 Arthmoor(아트무어) 관련 비판에 관해 정리한 문서.

아트무어의 그간 악행들과 과거 행적에 대한 레딧 게시글

자동 번역에 한국어를 지원하고 있어 자막 설정을 하면 내용을 이해할 수 있다.

아트무어는 베데스다 게임 스튜디오에서 제작된 게임들의 MOD를 제작해온 미국인 남성 모더다. 넥서스 페이지에 의하면 2008년부터 활동을 시작한 것으로 추정된다. 엘더스크롤 5: 스카이림의 버그들을 대거 수정하는 비공식 스카이림 패치를 비롯해 폴아웃 4, 스타필드의 버그 패치 프로젝트를 총괄하고 있으며 이외 여러 편의성 모드들을 만들어 베데스다 게임 모딩판에서 유명한 인물이다.

그러나 후술할 인품 문제와 이에 따른 각종 구설수와 논란 및 사건사고들을 20년 동안 만들어 안티들 또한 매우 많은 모더다. 아트무어는 자신이 만들거나 총괄로 있는 모드에 대한 건설적인 비판과 조언을 자신에 대한 공격으로 간주해 극단적이고 감정적인 반응을 보이고 그 과정에서 상대방을 인신공격이나 조롱, 비하를 하는 거만한 언행과 자신이 불리한 정보는 선동질과 왜곡으로 감추고 타인이 자신의 모드에 게임 밸런스적 문제나 로어상 문제점을 근거로 수정을 하면 감정적인 반응을 하면서 정작 자신은 버그로 간주하고 마음대로 수정하는 내로남불을 당연시하는 불량한 행실로 모딩판에서 악명이 높다. 이 때문에 아트무어의 모드를 보이콧하거나 아트무어의 모드는 인정하고 사용해도 아트무어 개인에 우호적인 사람들은 그의 추종자들을 빼면 없다고 한다.

2.1. 자의적인 게임 컨텐츠 변경

겪어본 사람들은 알겠지만, 스카이림 비공식 패치는 진행하는데 어려움이 있는 버그뿐만 아니라 아트무어 및 팀원들의 독단적인 판단에 따라 마음에 들지 않거나 유저에 따라 호불호가 갈리는 구간조차 버그로 간주해서 고치는 일이 잦고, 로어를 반영한다는 이유로 변경하는 일이 잦다.

대표적으로 게임 진행에 악영향을 주는 버그가 아니나, 아트무어 및 비공식 스카이림 패치 팀원들이 자의적 판단에 따라 버그로 간주하고 수정된 사항은 다음과 같다.

궁술 스킬은 바닐라 버전 스카이림에서는 도둑의 선돌 효과를 받으면 궁술 스킬의 경험치가 증가한다. 그러나 비공식 패치 팀은 스카이림 게임 메뉴얼을 근거로 버그로 간주해 궁술 스킬은 전사의 선돌의 영향을 받도록 수정했다. 그러나 게임 메뉴얼은 오류가 매우 많고 궁술은 특성 상 다른 근접 전투 스킬과 달리 1대 1 및 다수를 상대로 한 전투보다 은신 저격에 특화되어있어 전사 스킬로 포함시키기엔 무리가 많다는 여론이 존재했다.[1]
레드벨리 광산 논란. 비공식 스카이림 패치의 문제점이 도마 위에 오른 사건이다. 바닐라 버전 쇼어의 돌 마을에 있는 레드벨리 광산은 에보니지만 NPC가 철 광산이라고 언급했다는 것을 근거로 비공식 스카이림 패치는 철 광산으로 수정했다. 그러나 엘더스크롤 온라인에서 레드벨리 광산이 에보니 광산임이 밝혀져 논란이 생겼다.

화술 스킬의 흥정(Haggling)이 예상보다 할인율이 낮자 이를 조정해서 패치했다. 그러나 수학적 소양을 갖춘 유저가 바닐라 버전의 계산 방식이 맞다고 정정을 했다. 흥정 스킬은 무조건 싸게 책정하는 것이 아니라 가성비에 맞게 좋게 변경해서 같은 값에 더 많은 아이템을 구매하게 해줄 수 있는 스킬에 가깝다고. 즉 버그픽스 모드가 버그를 만들어낸 아이러니한 상황이었으나, 아트무어는 "100달러의 물건이 87달러에 판매되면 15% 더 나은 결과를 얻었다고 볼 수 없다" 며 유저의 정정을 거부했다.

스카이림의 지역을 소개하는 인 게임 내 책에서 마을 하나(팔크리스)가 빠지자 이를 팀원이 자체적으로 텍스트를 입력해 수정했다. 엘더스크롤 시리즈의 책들은 외적으로 설정 충돌 오류 해결을 위해 작중 저자의 착각이나 오해, 편향된 시각, 윗선의 검열 등으로 로어와 의도적으로 충돌하는 내용이 서술되다보니 "해당 책자도 집필자가 착각해서 지역을 빠뜨린 것이 아닐까?" 라고 생각할 법한데 버그로 간주한 것이다.

에보니 블레이드는 바닐라에서는 제련 스킬로 강화할 수 없지만 비공식 패치에서는 강화할 수 있도록 수정, 로딩 스크린에 모든 무기와 방어구는 대장간에서 강화할 수 있습니다. 라는 문구를 추가했다.

일부 메쉬의 텍스쳐를 고해상도로 수정. 버그픽스랑 관계가 없으며 컴퓨터 사양 문제로 고해상도 텍스쳐를 사용하지 않는 유저들에게는 선택의 여지가 없이 사용을 강제로 하는 격이라 불만이 생길 수 밖에 없었다.

버그픽스 패치 모드를 제작 및 배포할 시, '비공식(Unofficial)' 이라는 명칭을 쓰는 암묵의 규칙을 만든 오블리비언 버그픽스 패치와 폴아웃 3 버그픽스 패치 제작자 및 총괄자였던 Kivan(키반)은 게임 진행이 불가능하거나 심각한 악영향을 미치는 버그만 수정하거나 인품 논란이 없었으며, 폴아웃 뉴베가스 버그픽스 패치 모더 또한 게임 컨텐츠 일부를 변경했으나 극히 일부에 그 역시 인품 논란이 없어 다른 버그픽스 모드는 트러블이 없었지만 비공식 스카이림 패치는 아트무어의 만행과 지나치게 게임 컨텐츠에도 손을 대서 논란이 많다.

2.2. 구버전 미제공

모더 아트무어는 자신의 모드를 새로운 버전으로 업데이트하면 구버전은 삭제한다. 이는 구버전을 사용하면서 여러 버그가 발생할 수 있고[2] 또한 언오피셜 패치의 경우, 구버전 크랙을 사용하는 복돌 유저들이 사용하는 것을 막기 위한 목적도 있다. 하지만 최신 버전에서 버그가 발생해 그 원인은 알아보기 위해 구버전으로 테스트해보는 등의 정당한 이유가 있을 수 있는데, 이러한 경우에도 절대 구버전을 제공해주지 않아 종종 논란이 되어왔다. 아트무어의 주장에 의하면 비공식 오블리비언 버그패치 총괄이자 비공식 스카이림 버그패치 초대 팀장이었던 키반의 유지를 이은 것이라고 하나 키반은 해당 건으로 구설수가 없었다.

스카이림 애니버서리 에디션이 출시되면서 스카이림이 업데이트되자 새로운 버전에 대응하는 언오피셜 패치를 업데이트(4.2.6)한 뒤 역시나 구버전(4.2.5b)은 삭제했다. 스카이림 애니버서리 에디션에 대응하는 스카이림 버전(SE 1.6.318 이후)은 아직 모드 충돌이 많아 사용하기 꺼리는 유저들이 많음에도 불구하고 구판을 삭제해 해당 모더에 대한 반발이 커졌다. 해당 모더는 이러한 반발에 대해, 다른 게임 커뮤니티였으면 5년 뒤에도 업데이트해준다고 아주 좋아죽었을텐데 엘더스크롤 커뮤니티는 고마운 줄 모르고 베데스다만 까기 바쁜 멍청이들만 있다고 댓글을 남겼다. 애니버서리 버전을 업데이트한 CACO제작자는 SE와 AE버전을 따로 나눠서 구버전을 내리지도 않았는데 왜 구버전을 내렸는지는 알 수가 없다. 다행히 넥서스에서 정책을 바꿔 구버전 파일도 저장되도록 해둔 덕분에 구버전(4.2.5b) 언오피셜 패치를 다운로드 받을 수 있다.# AE 출시 이후 AE가 SE보다 더 우월하다는 글을 작성하고 유저들이 근거없이 AE를 비방한다며 SE 1.5.97 버전에 잔류하고 있는 유저들을 AE출시 n개월차가 됐는데도 구 버전에 머무르고 있다며 안티패처라 조롱하는 중이다. AE에서 몇 가지 버그 수정과 Visual Studio 버전 변경으로 최적화가 이뤄졌다고 주장하지만 정작 무슨 버그가 수정되었는지, 벤치마킹 수행 후 유의미한 성능 향상이 있는지에 대한 정보는 내놓지 못하고 Visual Studio가 버전업으로 향상되었으며 신버전이 구버전보다 못할 리가 없다는 식. 뿐만 아니라 AE 출시 이후 버전업 된 언오피셜 패치의 변경로그도 남기지 않아 SE와 AE는 다르다고 주장하면서 뭐가 다른지는 하나도 확인할 수 없게 만들어놓았다.

2.3. 기타

이외에도 모드팩 사용자들을 조롱 및 비난하는 발언을 하거나, 비공식 패치에서 수정된 요소를 되돌리는 모드가 나오면 해당 모드 제작자에게 과도한 비난을 하거나,[3] 레거시 오브 드래곤본 제작진들에게 시비를 걸거나, 스카이림 VR버전 포팅에 DMCA 클레임을 시전하는 등의 행동을 해 유저들에게 비판을 받았다.

3. 논란 및 사건사고

3.1. 게이트-게이트 사건

본 사건은 아트무어가 Open Cities Skyrim를 배포, 유저들이 Open Cities Skyrim를 다운받고 나서였다. Open Cities Skyrim를 적용하니 각 도시에 오블리비언 게이트 조각상 메쉬가 설치되었는데 아트무어는 이를 전작의 사건을 기념한다는 개념으로 넣은 것이라 주장했으나 메쉬의 디자인 퀄리티가 매우 떨어져 미관을 해치고 설정 상으로도 이상해서 많은 유저들이 불만을 품고 문제 제기를 했다.

불만이 커지는 중 아트무어가 아무런 수정 대응이나 반응을 보이지 않자 Upmarket Mango라는 모더가 오블리비언 게이트 메쉬를 삭제한 Open Cities Skyrim를 스팀 창작마당에 배포했다. 그러자 아트무어는 이 수정된 모드를 굉장히 불쾌하게 여기며 저작권 침해를 근거로 삭제를 요구, 결국 의도는 나쁘지 않았지만 원작자의 허가를 얻지 않은 무단 수정본이라는 내용이 받아들여서 Upmarket Mango의 모드는 내려갔다. 이를 본 Adraeus라는 모더는 Open Cities Skyrim를 직접 수정하지 않는 대신, "Gate Crusher" 라는 별도의 패치를 만들어 오블리비언 게이트를 삭제하게끔 구성했다. 그러나 아트무어는 이도 민감하게 받아들이며 Gate Crusher 모드의 삭제 요구를 했었다. Gate Crusher는 처음에는 아트무어의 요구를 받아들여 삭제되었지만 Adraeus는 Upmarket Mango와 다르게 굴하지 않고 삭제될 수 없는 근거를 대서 재업로드가 되었다.

아트무어는 이 소식을 접하더니 타인의 모드를 마음대로 수정하는 행위를 맹렬히 비난하며 악성 소프트웨어라는 비하 발언까지 하며 분란을 키웠다. 결국 여론이 악화되자 아트무어는 Open Cities Skyrim의 오블리비언 게이트 메쉬를 삭제, 대신 이 오블리비언 게이트 메쉬가 포함된 오픈 시티즈 스카이림 모드는 "Oblivion Gates in Cities" 로 분리를 했다.

3.2. 스카이림 VR과의 갈등 및 서브 레딧 차단 사건

스카이림 SE가 발매된 지 1년 후, 스카이림 VR 버전이 출시되었다. 즉시 타 모더들은 SE 버전으로 나온 비공식 패치(USSEP)를 VR 버전으로 포팅해서 사용을 했으며 USSEP를 선행으로 요구하는 다른 SE의 모드들도 VR에 적용이 되어 VR 유저들은 스카이림을 즐길 수 있었다. 그러나 2018년 4월, 비공식 패치 팀은 4.1.3 버전으로 업데이트 후 구 버전을 삭제했다. 상기 서술대로 구 버전은 무조건 삭제하는 방침을 고수해서로 스카이림 VR 유저들은 모드 사용 문제에 낙관이 부딪혔다.

그러나 아트무어는 "베데스다는 VR 게임에 모드 사용을 지원하지 않았다. 따라서 버그 패치는 VR 사용자들에게 지원되지 않는다. 그리고 VR 장비는 매우 비싸다보니 모드가 제대로 작동하는지 테스트를 하기 위해 구매하는 것은 비효율적이라는 것을 유의한다. 그러니 앞으로 VR 관련 질문글은 받지 않으며 보일 시 삭제한다." 라며 VR 유저들을 냉대 및 무시하는 발언을 해 논란을 키웠다. 결국 스카이림 모드 서브레딧에서 아트무어에 대한 불만을 표출하자, 아트무어도 해당 서브레딧에 가서 유저들과 대화를 나누었다. 그러나 아트무어의 말투는 거칠다 못해 VR 유저들을 계속 비하하는 발언을 일삼아 결국 영구 차단을 당했다.

3.3. XBOX판 비공식 패치 갈등

넥서스가 정책을 변경하며 구 버전 모드를 삭제할 수 없게 되자 스카이림 VR 및 SE(1.5.97 버전) 유저들은 환호했으나 여전히 콘솔판 유저들은 콘솔 특성상 모드 사용이 극히 제한적이였다. XBOX판 스카이림은 엑스박스 특성상 용량이 5GB 한정에 적용가능 개수도 150개가 제한이었으나 다른 콘솔판과 달리 모드 적용은 가능했기에 엑박판 스카이림 모딩판은 어느정도 활성화가 되어있었다. 비공식 스카이림 패치는 특성상 용량이 366MB이였기에 엑박판 유저들은 5GB 용량 내에서 활용을 위해 비공식 패치를 참고해 치명적인 버그만 수정하는 픽스 모드들을 개발, 이 버그 픽스 모드들은 "Reconciliation" 이라는 이름으로 배포되었다. 그러나 해당 버그 픽스 모드는 이용약관 규정 위반을 근거로 삭제되었는데 유저들은 DMCA를 남용하는 아트무어를 의심, Reconciliation 제작자가 이번엔 비공식 패치가 포함된 버전과 포함안된 버전을 올리자, 포함안된 버전이 삭제된 것을 근거로 아트무어에 대한 의심이 커져갔다. 그러나 아트무어는 Reconciliation 제작자에게 연락해 Reconciliation가 삭제된 것은 자신이 한 일이 아니며 엑박판에 맞게 비공식 패치를 수정해보겠다고 해명했지만 이미 과거 업보로 이미지가 상당히 안좋아졌기에 유저들은 아트무어의 해명을 믿지 않았다.

4. 여담

아트무어가 현직 팀장에 자신의 넥서스 계정명으로 모드를 업데이트해서 비공식 스카이림 패치는 아트무어가 만든 모드라는 오해가 많이 퍼져있다. 정확히는 비공식 스카이림 패치는 팀 형식으로 운영되며 팀원 및 모더들의 기여로 버그 픽스를 추가 및 통합하는 방식으로 이뤄지며 초대 팀장은 Kivan(키반)이라는 모더였다. 키반은 상술한 비공식 오블리비언 패치들을 만든 고참 모더로 스카이림 또한 버그 픽스 모드의 팀장으로 주도했으나 개인적 사정으로 팀원들에게 연락을 못하고 잠수를 타면서 베데스다 게임 모딩판에서 완전히 종적을 감추었다. 이후, 아트무어가 2대 팀장으로 자리를 이어받은 것.

따라서 레드무어 광산 패치 또한 아트무어는 처음에는 철 광산으로 변경하는 것에 부정적인 의견이었다. 그러나 팀원 하나가 강력하게 주장해서 수긍하고 받아들인 것.

아트무어의 악명과 버그 패치 모드들을 독점시하는 문제 때문에 모딩판 유저들도 아트무어의 영향력을 줄이고자 노력했다. 스타필드 레딧에서는 언오피셜 패치 보이콧 움직임까지 나타났다.# 2024년 6월 크리에이션 클럽이 생기면서 Unofficial Starfield Patch를 올렸으나, 대신 Starfield Community Patch를 쓰겠다는 사람들이 늘어나는 중이다. 그러나 Starfield Community Patch가 팀원들의 개인적 사정 문제로 업데이트가 중단이 된 반면 아트무어가 팀장으로 있는 Unofficial Starfield Patch는 주기적으로 업데이트가 되고 있는 상태이다.

원래는 안그랬는데 시간이 지나면서 베데스다 게임의 버그들을 패치하는 모더라는 자리에 심취하거나 그 과정에서 스트레스를 받아 타락한 것이 아니냐는 의견이 존재하지만, 상술한 2012년에 발생한 "게이트-게이트 사건" 때의 태도를 보면 원래부터 성격에 문제가 있었던 것으로 보인다.

보통 사람들이라면 출근 및 잠을 잘 시간에 아트무어는 그 시간에도 인터넷에서 모습을 드러내거나 자신의 부정적인 평가에 대해 일일히 과민반응을 보이고, 대형 버그 패치 모드들을 주기적으로 빠른 기간내에 업데이트를 한다는 점에서 일부 사람들은 시간 빌게이츠가 아니냐는 의혹을 던지고 있다.
