비디오테이프의 재생 겸 녹화 장치이다. VCR은 '비디오테이프 녹화기'라는 의미.
종종 Video Tape Recorder의 약칭인 VTR로도 불리지만 VTR은 원래 오픈릴 테이프를 재생하는 기계를 의미하고 비디오카세트를 재생하는 기계는 VCR이 맞다. 대중적으로 VCR를 VTR로 잘못 알려진 것은 전자회사들이 VCR를 VTR로 홍보한 탓이다.[3]
현역이던 시절에는 가정과 직장, 학교, 도서관 외에 전세/관광버스와 항공기에도 설치되었지만 지금은 거의 사장되어가고 있다.
MSX(재믹스), 패미콤, 세가 마스터 시스템 등 옛날 콘솔게임을 캡처보드마냥 VCR에 녹화할 수는 있다. 다만 구세대 콘솔 게임기는 비디오 신호가 비교적 정상적이지 않아서 TBC나 캡처보드에서 잘못 처리될 가능성이 있기에 좋은 선택이 되지는 못한다.
2. 작동 원리
Medion MD8910으로 보는 VHS 테이프의 삽입/꺼냄(위키미디어 공용)VHS의 자기 테이프를 비스듬히 회전하는 헤드가 스치며 읽어내는 방식으로, 이 방식을 나선형 스캔이라고 한다. (Helical Scan) 이는 소니의 베타맥스, 8mm 등에도 적용 됐다.

일반적으로 VCR에는 영상 버퍼가 없으므로 이때 읽은 신호가 그대로 화면에 출력된다. 문제는 이 신호가 상당히 더러워서 디지털 장비에서 캡처하거나 아날로그 VCR로 재녹화시 왜곡될 위험이 있다. 그래서 고성능 VCR에서는 버퍼가 존재하는데 이것을 TBC(Time Base Corrector)라고 부른다. TBC가는 디지털 버퍼에 넣어둬서 재정렬한 다음 다시 출력해주는 원리다.
또한 NTSC용 VHS 규격을 기준으로 서술한 거라서 PAL용 VHS는 NTSC용 VHS하고 기록 규격이 어느 정도 다르다. 대표적으로 헤드드럼이 1500rpm으로 회전하고 테이프의 속도 또한 SP기준 초속 2.339cm로 이동한다. 그래서 멀티시스템을 지원하는 특수한 VCR이 아닌 이상 호환되지 않는다. 다만 테이프는 동일한 규격을 이용하기 때문에 다른 방식으로 기록한 테이프에 녹화를 덮여씌우는 것은 가능하다.
그리고 VCR 규격에 따라서 컨트롤 헤드가 없는 경우도 있다. 대표적으로 Video8과 miniDV는 컨트롤 헤드가 없다. - 음성 출력
컨트롤 헤드는 오디오 헤드를 겸하는 구조로 되어 있다. 그러나 오디오 헤드는 카세트테이프보다 더 느린 속도로 음성을 재생하는 꼴이라 이 방식은 잡음도 심하고 녹음 가능한 주파수 대역이 좁았기 때문에 대략 50Hz~10kHz, S/N 40dB 정도의 끔찍한 성능을 자랑한다.
그래서 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해서 헤드 드럼쪽에 오디오 헤드를 추가하여 Hi-Fi(하이파이) 오디오 규격을 만들기에 이른다. 이 방식은 영상신호에 별도의 음성신호를 끼워넣어 고음질 스테레오 음성을 기록하는데 이쪽 음질이 훨씬 좋아서 대략 20Hz~20kHz, S/N 75dB, DR 90dB 정도로 CD에 버금가는 성능을 가지고 있다. 하이파이를 지원하는 VHS VCR은 하위 호환을 위해서 기존의 오디오 헤드로도 기록을 병행하도록 되어있다.
VCR 규격에 따라서 음성 출력 구조는 다르다. 베타맥스는 비디오 헤드로 하이파이를 지원하고 Video8는 오디오 헤드 없이 비디오 헤드만으로 하이파이 오디오를 출력할 수 있는 구조로 되어있다.
- 소거 헤드
녹화 시 이전 신호가 남아있으면 녹화가 깨끗하게 안 되므로 신호를 지우기 위한 별도의 헤드가 있다. 소거헤드에 고주파의 교류 전기신호를 보내주면 그에 따라 고주파 자기장이 발생하는데 이 고주파 자기장이 테이프를 교란시켜 이전의 신호가 날아가는 원리를 이용하는 것.
그런데 위에서도 설명했고 그림에도 나와있듯이 영상 신호는 비스듬하게 저장되는데, 소거 헤드는 수직으로 있으면서 소거를 하므로, 이전에 녹화된 테이프에 녹화를 하면 녹화 시작 부분에서 이전의 영상의 일부가 제대로 지워지지 않고 남아 있어 마치 영상이 전환되는 것처럼 보이는 문제가 있다. 때문에 편집에 특화된 고급 VCR은 헤드 드럼에도 별도의 소거 헤드를 두는 방법으로 이 문제를 해결하기도 했다.
Video 8 VCR은 규격상 헤드 드럼에만 소거 헤드가 있도록 강제되어 있다.

또한 필름 방식이기 때문에 플레이어의 고장과 오작동으로 내부에서 꼬여버리는 난감한 사태가 가끔 일어난다. 흔히 "테이프를 먹었다/씹었다."라고 표현한다. 일단 필름이 구겨져 버리면 비디오가 나오다가 갑자기 전원이 꺼진다던가 에러가 뜬다던가 내뱉는데 위에서 나온 내용처럼 VCR 기기에는 내부 버퍼가 없어서 잘못된 비디오 데이터가 들어가면 내부 프로그램이 자동으로 내뱉거나 전원을 꺼버리도록 만든듯 하다. 이런 일이 발생하는 원인은 상당히 다양하지만 핀치롤러가 맨들맨들해서 삐끗해서 테이프가 꼬여버리거나 모드 스위치가 오염되어서 잘못된 스위칭으로 기계적인 부품들이 오작동하여 꼬여버리거나 고무 벨트나 내부 동력 전달 장치의 상태가 나빠서 테이프를 감는 릴로 동력을 잘 전달하지 못해 테이프가 정상적으로 감기지 않아 꼬여버리는 것이 가장 일반적인 원인이지만, 소니타이머 등의 이유로 기어 부품이 깨지는 등 내부 부품 파손으로도 발생한다. 일단 꺼내면 십중팔구 필름이 구겨졌거나 심하면 찢어져서 쓸 수가 없을 정도...
그리고 헤드드럼이 빠른 속도로 회전하다보니 물리적으로 오래 버티기 힘든 구조인 것도 있다. 시간이 지날 수록 헤드나 드럼이 마모되기 때문에 일정 사용시간마다 헤드를 교체하지 않으면 품질이나 기능에 문제가 발생한다. 헤드드럼의 교체 주기는 기기에 따라 다르지만 평균적으로 2000시간 정도로 다른 장비들에 비해 상당히 짧은편이다.
이러한 문제점은 물리적인 문제로 발생하다보니 근본적으로 해결할 수 없어서 VCR을 끝까지 괴롭히는 원인이 되었다. 특히 무결점이 필요한 환경에서는 최악.
4. VCR 설치법
VCR은 요즈음에 사용하는 HDMI 같은 디지털 포트를 사용하지 않고, 아날로그 포트를 사용한다. 일부 DVD 콤보 모델들은 컴포넌트나 HDMI를 지원하는 경우도 있지만 DVD 전용이거나 기기에서 다른 이유로 컨버터를 내장하고 있는 것 뿐이다. 따라서 뒷면에는 텔레비전과 연결하기 위해 커넥터 종류는 약 2가지로 줄일 수 있다.- RF 단자(TV 안테나 단자)
기존 아날로그 텔레비전의 안테나 단자에 연결하는 방법으로, 한국 기준으로 채널 3번과 4번을 사용하여 출력한다. 보통은 VCR 뒷면에 스위치가 달려있지만 간혹 메뉴에서 설정할 수 있는 기기도 존재한다. 일본은 1번과 2번을 사용하는데 채널 주파수가 달라 한국 내수용 TV로 연결하면 CATV 95번과 96번[4]으로 출력된다. PAL/SECAM B/G, I, D/K, K1, L의 경우 UHF 30-36CH로 출력되며 조절 나사를 통해 채널을 맞추는 방식이다. 멀티시스템 VCR은 UHF 14-69CH[System-N/M]로 출력한다. - RCA 단자
보통 3개의 단자로 이루어져 있으며, 1개는 영상, 나머지 2개는 스테레오 음향출력을 담당하며 오래된 기종이거나 저가형인 경우 음성 출력부분이 스테레오가 아닌 2개의 단자로 이루어진 모노 출력으로 되어있는 경우도 있다.
물론 기종에 따라서는 S-Video 단자, 컴포넌트, HDMI를 지원하는 경우도 있다. 아날로그 VCR은 기술적으로 S-Video가 최선이고 그 이상을 지원하는 경우에는 기기에 컨버터가 내장되어 있다는 의미이다.

- 6헤드: 4헤드에 2개의 3배 전용 재생 헤드가 추가된 방식. 3배속 녹화물에서도 비교적 노이즈가 적은 화질을 가지고 있다. 국내에서는 90년대 중반의 LG 제품중에서 하이파이 표기가 없는 6헤드 제품은 3배 전용 6헤드이다.
- 6헤드 하이파이: 4헤드에 2개의 Hi-Fi 음성 헤드가 추가된 방식. 보통 국내에서 6헤드라고 하면 하이파이이지만 가끔 아닌 경우가 있다.
- 7헤드: 6헤드에 1개의 편집용 헤드가 추가된 방식. 국내에서는 1990년 무렵에 삼성과 금성(LG)에서 선보였지만 높은 가격 때문에 많이 판매되지는 않은 듯.

5.2. 테이프 삽입방식에 의한 분류
- 상단 삽입식(탑로딩): 비디오 테이프를 기기 위에서 집어넣는 방식이다. VCR 본체 위의 테이프 투입 덮개를 손으로 열고 닫는다. 1970년대 일본 가전 업체들이 대중화시킨 VCR 모델부터 1980년대 중반 제품까지 채택된 형태이다. 국내 최초의 가정용 VCR 기기였던 삼성전자 SV-7700(1980년 출시), 국내 최초의 전자식 VCR 기기였던 금성사 GHV-8100(1981년 출시)은 물론, 당시 국내 가전3사의 초기형 VCR 모델은 테이프 수동 삽입식 탑로딩을 따랐다.

- 전면 삽입식(프론트로딩): 비디오 테이프를 VCR 기기 앞에서 밀어넣는 방식으로, 일단 테이프가 삽입되면 영상이 자동으로 재생될 수 있게끔 설계된 형태이다.[6] 1980년대 중반부터 고가 모델에 한해 국내에서도 적용됐는데 본체 상단의 공간을 쓸 수 있는 편의로 급속히 탑로딩 방식을 대체했다. 상단 삽입식은 저가형 또는 미니형 모델에서 존속됐으나[7], 전면 삽입식의 단점이던 부드럽지 못한 구동 문제가 해결되자 시장에서 빠르게 퇴출된다.
6. VCR을 생산한 회사
1980년대 초부터 20년 이상 한 시대를 풍미했지만, 아날로그 VHS 기술의 한계인 화질과 음향 문제가 획기적으로 개선된 디지털 광디스크를 거쳐 케이블 방송, 초고속 인터넷의 확대로 2000년대 중반부터 급속히 수요가 줄어들자 대한민국에선 2007년 이후 신규 모델의 출시가 중단되었다.[9]일본은 자체 제조가 많았지만 미국 유럽은 OEM이 섞여 있다. OEM인 경우 주로 일본의 업체에 맡겼다.

1980년대 초반에는 대도시 부유층의 혼수 품목 중 하나였으나, 1980년대 중반부터 가정용 영상가전 제품으로 급속히 보급되어 1990년대 중반까지 중산층 신혼부부가 29~32인치 컬러TV + 6헤드 VHS + 콤팩트 오디오 조합의 영상-음향 기기를 신혼집에 갖추는 건 필수에 가까왔다. 1980년대 초만 해도 부유층의 전유물이다시피 했으나, VCR 제조 기술의 국산화 성공, 86 아시안 게임과 88 올림픽 특수로 보급률이 꾸준히 상승했고, 여기에 1989년부터 KBS 3TV(EBS의 전신)를 통해 TV 고교 가정학습(TV 과외)이 개시되면서 폭발적으로 보급되었다. 이러한 VCR 보급세에 힘입어 당시 비디오 테이프 대여점은 전성기를 누렸다.2000년대 중반에 들어선 DVD가 상용화되기 시작하고 VHS 비디오가 쇠퇴하기 시작하면서 삼성과 LG같은 국내 회사에선 DVD 플레이어와 VCR을 합친 DVD 콤보를 만들어 그 명맥을 나름대로 잇기도 하였다. 보급형은 4헤드이고 중급형 6헤드를 사용했다. 보급형과 중급형까지는 VCR하고 DVD 플레이어가 사실상 따로 돌아가는 원리이다. 그래서 컴포지트에서만 비디오 신호가 나온다.[22] S-Video나 컴포넌트는 DVD 플레이어 전용. 고급 기종은 DVD 레코더가 달린 제품인데, DVD 레코더에서 VCR의 비디오 신호를 캡처하고 컨트롤하는 원리로 완전히 동기화된 제품이다.
대다수의 VCR은 아날로그 튜너만 달려있어서 아날로그 방송이 종료된 현 상황에서 셋톱박스 도움 없이 단독으로 방송 녹화를 하지 못한다. 국내에서 DVD 콤보에 디지털 튜너가 달린 LG전자 LCS-1000이 출시된 적은 있지만 DTV 셋톱박스가 메인인 주객전도 기기. 대신 90년대 중반 이후의 VCR은 케이블 방송이나 위성방송(스카이라이프), 캠코더 등의 이유로 셋톱박스 사용 또는 캠코더 영상 복사에 대비하고 있어서 컴포지트 출력이 있는 셋톱박스가 있다면 예약녹화도 충분히 가능하다. 셋톱박스에 녹화할 방송 채널을 틀어둔 다음 예약녹화의 채널을 외부입력으로 잡으면 된다.
한편 일본에서는 디지털 지상파 튜너 + 디지털 BS 위성 튜너 + HDD 레코더 + BD/DVD 레코더 + VHS 레코더라는 정신나간 괴작이 나온 적이 있기도 하다.
2000년대 초까지 운용되던 관광버스에도 VCR이 탑재되어 있었고, 90년대 말 2000년대 초 시내버스 및 시외버스 운전석 상단에는 CCTV 녹화용 VCR이 탐재되어 있었다.
1981년 첫 컬러광고가 상용화되자 일부 광고가 VCR로 촬영되기 시작했으며 1983년부터는 전면 VCR 광고로 대체되기 시작했다.
