1. 개요

신생아(新生兒, newborn)는 새로 태어난 아기를 말한다. 갓난아기라고도 한다. 모자보건법에 따르면 정상적인 출산 기간 기준 보통 출생 후 28일까지가 신생아라고 한다. 1주일 이내는 초생아라고 한다. 신생아기는 인간발달의 2번째 단계이다. 첫번째는 태아기.

신생아는 출생 직후부터 1일 이내까지 1기, 1일 이후부터 7일 이내까지 2기, 7일 이후부터 1개월 이내까지 3기로 나눈다.

얼마 전까지 양수 속에서 헤엄치고 놀았기 때문에 몸 전체가 쭈글쭈글하다. 이 붓기는 점점 빠지며, 이후 젖살이 오른다.
신생아는 힘이 매우 약하며 머리조차 스스로 가누지 못한다. 혹시 신생아를 안게 되는 날이 온다면 목을 지탱하면서 조심스럽게 안는 것이 중요하다. 목을 지탱해 주지 않으면 목이 뒤로 꺾여 위험하다.[1] 한손은 펴서 목 뒤와 어깨를 받치고 나머지 한손은 엉덩이를 받치는데 능숙한 엄마들은 아기 머리를 팔꿈치에 끼우고 손으로 엉덩이를 받치는 식으로 해서 한손으로 들고 다닐 수도 있다.
잘 때도 조금씩 버둥거리거나 깨어있으면 계속 움직이는데 아무런 의미 없이 무작위로 이뤄지는 듯한 이 행동들이 사실은 감각 운동계의 발달과정 중 하나라는 연구결과가 나왔다. 그냥 막 움직여대는 것처럼 보여도 마치 탐사 활동처럼 근육사용이나 몸의 동작을 연습해 보거나 시험가동을 해보는 중인 것이다. #
시력 발달이 미약해 앞을 거의 보지 못하거나 볼 수 있더라도 흑백으로밖에 구분하지 못한다. 초점이 없어 동공이 풀려있는데 사람에 따라 약간 무섭게 보일 수 있다.
청각도 약해 잘 못 듣는다. 하지만 평균적으로 시야보다 빨리 발달하므로 아기가 있는 곳은 조용하게 유지하는 게 좋다.[2]
시력과 청각은 약하지만 후각은 비교적 발달되어 있어 엄마 냄새를 구분할 수 있다고도 하며 태어나서도 엄마의 양수 냄새를 맡으면 안정된다고도 한다.
사회성이 아직 전혀 발달되지 않은 상태기 때문에 아무리 앞에서 웃고 딸랑이 흔들며 까꿍거려 봐야 별다른 반응을 보일 수 없으며 간혹 보여주는 웃음은 배냇짓이라고 해서 사회성이라곤 전혀 찾아볼 수 없는 자극에 의한 반응 정도다. 거의 백 일 이후가 되면 부모의 말에 반응하고 표정도 다양해져서 우리가 흔히 아는 귀여운 아기의 모습이 되지만 신생아는 먹고, 자는 것을 반복하는 아주 연약한 존재일 뿐 심리적 소통을 바라서는 안 된다.
기압 적응력이 약하기 때문에 대부분의 항공사에서 신생아의 비행기 탑승을 적극적으로 거부한다.
거의 하루종일 잔다. 하루종일 자다 보니 부모 입장에서는 편하지만, 위가 작기 때문에 자주 젖을 찾는데다 밤낮을 가리지 않기 때문에 수면 부족에 시달릴 수 있다.
태에 있었을 때의 웅크린 자세를 취하려 한다. 특히 다리를 자주 구부린다. 자주 다리 스트레칭(일명 쭉쭉이)를 해 주는 게 좋다.
신체를 보호하고 약한 체온조절 능력을 보완하기 위해 온 몸에 작고 하얀 솜털이 나 있다.
피부가 투명하기 때문에 붉다. 이후 피부에 지방층이 붙기 시작하면서 점점 밝은 색으로 바뀐다. 선명한 붉은 색에 가까운 아기는 핑크색이 되었다가 하얗게 되고, 검붉은 아기는 어두운 톤의 피부가 된다.
태내에서 자란 약간의 머리카락이 있다. 이를 배냇머리라고 하는데, 당연히 길이도 짧고 숱도 매우 적기에 대부분의 갓난아기는 사실상 대머리라고 봐야 한다. 그런데 태어날 때부터 배냇머리가 거의 성인 수준으로 수북하게 나 있는 아기들도 간혹 있는데, 이런 아기들은 백일 정도가 될 때까지 머리를 안 깎아주면 엄청난 뻗친머리를 자랑하게 된다.
아직 성대가 제대로 발달되지 않았기에, 우는 소리는 뭔가 쥐어짜는 듯 악을 쓰는 소리다. 흔히 아기 울음소리로 쓰이는 우렁찬 '응애'는 조금 더 커야 들을 수 있다.
아기를 좋아하는 사람에게도 이 때가 아기가 가장 귀여울 때는 아니다. 피부는 붉고 쭈글쭈글하며 부어 있고 머리카락도 케이스에 따라 없기도 하며, 눈을 뜨지 못하거나 눈을 떠도 동공이 풀려 있어 좀 무서워 보일 수도 있다. 그래서 나중에 아기가 한창 예쁠 때 과거 갓난아기 때 사진을 보면 '우리가 이걸 보고 예쁘다고 했냐?'며 괴리감에 빠지기도 한다. 물론 부모가 이걸 자각하는 건 한참 후의 말이지 갓난아기를 보는 당시에는 그저 한없이 사랑스러워 보인다. 반대로 이 시기의 아이가 그다지 예뻐보이지 않아서 자괴감에 빠지는 부모들도 있는데, 이런 경우는 아기가 점점 커가면서 100일 정도가 되면 귀여움을 느끼게 되고 그제서야 신생아 특유의 특징들이 사라진 것에 아쉬움을 토로하기도 한다. 이는 갓 태어난 아기보다는 몇 달 지난 아기가 야생에서의 생존 확률이 더 높기 때문에 어른들이 여러 자녀 중 생존 확률이 더 높고 건강한 개체에 보다 집중하도록 진화한 결과물이라는 연구 결과가 있다.몇 개월 된 아기가 가장 귀여워 보일까?

3. 주의할 점

목욕 및 배꼽 관리: 신생아 목욕하는 방법은 양육자가 잘 알고 있어야 한다. 특히 신생아 제대(배꼽)가 탈락되기 전과 후 관리방법도 중요한데 목욕 후에 배꼽부분을 잘 건조시켜 주어야 한다.
체온ㆍ습도 유지: 앞에도 서술된 것과 같이 체온 조절 능력이 좋지 않다. 그러므로 수시로 온도를 체크해 주는 것이 좋다. (참고로 성인보다 체온이 약간 높다.) 또한 습도 조절도 중요하다. 습도는 감기 같은 질병에 영향을 미치는데 신생아의 경우 약을 쓰기가 매우 난감하므로 이왕이면 관리를 철저하게 해서 예방하는 게 좋다.
배꼽 감염: 탯줄이 떨어질 때까지 1~2주 걸린다. 이 때, 탯줄이 기저귀에 닿지 않도록 하며(윗부분을 살짝 접는다. 요즘엔 탯줄부분만 파여있는 기저귀도 나오는 듯 하다.) 소독을 꼼꼼히 한다. 떨어지지 않으면 억지로 배꼽을 떼지 말고 병원에 데려가야 한다.
누운 자세 유지: 갓난아기를 절대로 장시간 강제로 앉히거나 머리쪽이 위로 경사지도록 눕혀선 안된다. 아직 신체 발달이 덜 된 탓에 자세를 잘못 잡으면 기도가 막혀 질식사할 가능성이 있기 때문이다. 실제로 유명 아동용품 메이커인 피셔 프라이스에서 살짝 경사진 흔들요람을 발매했다가 신생아 32명이 사망하는 사고 후 리콜된 비극적인 사건도 있다.#
절대 흔들지 않는다: 이 시기에는 척추, 뇌 등 중요장기가 자리잡지 않는다. 심할 경우 흔들린 아이 증후군으로 사망에 이르기도 한다.
위생: 갓난아기의 면역력이 성인보다 훨씬 떨어지므로 주의해야 한다.

한국에는 흔히 1958년생([age(1958-12-31)]~[age(1958-01-01)]세) 개띠가 제일 많다고 하지만 그땐 행정력이 국가 구석구석까지 제대로 미치지 않았고 영아 사망률이 높던 시기라 출생신고를 2-3년 늦게 하는 경우가 대부분이었다. 그래서 1960년대까지 태어난 사람들은 호적상의 나이랑 실제 나이가 일치하지 않는 경우가 많다. 공식적인 신생아 집계가 이뤄진 것은 1971년생([age(1971-12-31)]~[age(1971-01-01)]세)부터다.

명리학적으로 좋은 띠라고 알려진 해엔 일시적으로 출산율이 조금 뛰어오르기도 한다. 2007년생([age(2007-12-31)]~[age(2007-01-01)]세)은 황금돼지띠라는 소문이 돌아 출생률이 조금 올랐었지만 2007년은 정해년으로, 정 자는 불 속성의 글자라 실은 붉은돼지띠라 말해야 정확하다. 막상 진짜 황금돼지띠[3]였던 2019년에는 출산율 변화가 거의 없었다.

저출산 추세에 따른 지방소멸 기조 탓에 시골에는 어느 해 출생신고가 1명도 안 된 면들도 있다. 제천시 한수면, 춘천시 북산면 [4] 등이 대표적이다. 저출산이 심화된 근래에는 대한민국 제2의 도시라는 부산광역시 중구 남포동에서도 출생신고가 전무한 상황이 벌어지기도 했다.

서울특별시 강동구 둔촌1동도 출생신고 제로의 리스트에 이름을 올린 적이 있지만 그 쪽은 둔촌주공아파트가 재건축에 들어가면서 출생아가 0명이 되었던 일시적 현상이다.~~거주민 자체가 0명이었을 텐데 아기가 태어날 리가~~

신생아들 중에는 정상적인 기간[5]보다 훨씬 빨리 태어난 미숙아들도 있는데 인큐베이터 없이는 생명유지 자체가 힘들기 때문에 신생아 중환자실(Neonatal ICU)에서 보호를 받는다. 조산 문서 참조.

정상적으로 주수를 채워도 2.5kg 이하면 의사 판단과 검사 결과를 통해 인큐베이터에 들어간다.

신생아는 사망률이 매우 높다. 2020년대의 대한민국의 신생아 사망률은 대략 0.15%로, 전체 영아 사망의 절반 이상을 차지한다. 70대 중후반 이상으로 가야 1개월 이내 사망률이 신생아 사망률보다 높아지게 된다.
