그의 앨범 "The Dock of the Bay"에 수록되었다. 앨범과 싱글 모두 오티스 레딩이 비행기 사고로 사망한 이후에 발표되어 빌보드 핫 100 1위에 올랐다. 참고로 이 곡이 빌보드 핫 100 역사상 처음으로 사후에 1위를 한 사례이다. 롤링 스톤 선정 500대 명곡에서 38위에 랭크되었다. 본래 정통 R&B, 소울 가수였던 오티스 레딩이 비틀즈의 영향을 받아 자신의 노래 스타일에 변화를 주려는 과정에서 나온 곡이었다고 한다.이 노래의 녹음일은 1967년 12월 7일인데, 이 날은 그가 죽기 3일 전이다.
