1. 개요

경기도 시흥시 중부에 위치한 행정동. 법정동으로는 광석동, 장현동(시흥)|장현동, 하상동, 하중동(시흥)|하중동을 관할한다.

'연성(蓮城)'이라는 지명은 이 지역의 대표적인 명소인 관곡지(법정동 하중동 소재)와 깊은 관련이 있다. 조선 전기의 문신 강희맹(姜希孟) 선생이 중국 명나라에서 가져온 연꽃 씨앗을 이곳에 심어 연꽃이 널리 퍼지게 되었고, 이로 인해 당시 안산군의 별호가 '연성'으로 불린 데서 유래되었다.

본래 연성동은 1989년 시흥시 출범 당시에는 존재하지 않았던 행정동이다. 1991년 1월 15일 '시흥시 출장소 설치 조례'에 따라 연성출장소가 처음 설치되었으며, 당시에는 목감동 관할의 광석동·능곡동·하상동, 안산동 관할의 화정동, 신관동 관할의 하중동, 거모동 관할의 장곡동·장현동 등 넓은 지역을 관할했다. 같은 해 9월 1일 연성동으로 승격되었고, 이후 2010년 9월 20일 능곡동이, 2014년 3월 1일에는 장곡동이 각각 행정동으로 분리되어 나가면서 현재의 관할 구역을 갖추게 되었다.

과거 전형적인 농촌 지역이었으나, 연성 택지 지구 및 장현 택지 지구 개발로 대규모 아파트 단지가 들어서면서 도시적인 면모로 크게 변화하였다. 시흥시청이 법정동 장현동(시흥)|장현동에 위치하고 있으며, 국도 제39호선(시흥대로)이 동의 중심부를 관통한다.

'광석동(廣石洞)'이라는 지명은 마을 앞에 넓은 들이 펼쳐져 있어 '넓은들'이라 불린 데서 유래되었다고 한다.

안산군 초산면 하하리 (下下里, 1896)

조선 시대에는 경기도 안산군 초산면 광석리와 하하리 지역이었다. 일제강점기 당시인 1912년 2월 5일 조선총독부 경기도 고시 제7호에 따라 안산군 내 동리의 구역과 명칭이 변경될 때 광석리로 통합되었다. 이후 1914년 3월 1일, 안산군이 시흥군과 수원군으로 분리·통합되는 과정에서 시흥군에 편입되었으며, 같은 해 3월 13일 조선총독부 경기도령 제3호에 따라 옛 안산군의 군내면, 인화면, 초산면이 통합되어 수암면이 신설되면서 시흥군 수암면 광석리가 되었다.(부군면 통폐합) 대한민국 정부 수립 후인 1988년 12월 31일 시흥군이 폐지되고, 1989년 1월 1일 소래읍, 수암면, 군자면이 합쳐져 시흥시로 승격되면서 시흥시 광석동이 되어 현재에 이른다.

2.3.3. 자연환경 및 특징

시흥시 중남부에 위치하며, 북쪽으로는 시흥시 하상동·하중동과 접하고, 서쪽으로는 장현동, 동쪽으로는 산현동과 물왕동과 인접한다. 국도 제39호선(시흥대로)이 지나가며, 일명 '개나리봉'이라고도 불리는 범배산이 있다. 연성초등학교가 이곳에 위치한다. 주거지 위주로 개발제한구역이 일부 해제되었으나, 전반적으로 개발이 더디게 진행되어 다른 지역에 비해 시설이나 인구는 적은 편이다.

2.3.4. 자연 마을

나븐들(넓은들): 범배산 동쪽에 위치한 마을로, 들판이 넓다고 하여 '넓은들'이라는 의미의 '나븐들'로 불렸다. 마을회관을 중심으로 남서쪽은 '남서골', 동북쪽은 '아랫말', 연성초등학교 인근은 '넘어말' 등으로 불렸다. 과거 하동 정씨(河東鄭氏), 안동 권씨(安東權氏), 전주 이씨(全州李氏), 안동 김씨(安東金氏) 등이 거주했다고 한다.
둔턱골(둔터골): 나븐들 서쪽, 능곡동 삼거리 북쪽에 있던 마을이다. 조선시대에 바닷물이 들어왔을 때 높은 둔덕에 터를 잡고 살아 '둔터골'이라 불렸다고 하며, 주로 정선 전씨(旌善全氏)가 대성을 이루며 살았다. 1970년대 이후 개발제한구역으로 묶여 발전이 더뎠으나, 마을 어귀에 식당이 들어서는 등 변화가 있었다. 현재는 장현택지개발지구에 포함되어 마을의 옛 모습은 사라진 상태이다.

산을 사이에 두고 나븐들과 둔턱골은 1980년대 중반 각각 광석1통과 광석2통으로 분리되기도 했다.

2.4.1. 명칭 유래

1789년경 작성된 『호구총수』에는 현재의 하상동, 하중동 일대를 하직곶리(下職串里)와 중직곶리(中職串里) 등으로 기록하고 있다. 이는 현재의 하상동 외에 물왕동의 월미마을과 광석동의 너븐들까지 포함하는 넓은 지역을 지칭했던 것으로 보인다. 이들 지역은 옛 지명에 공통적으로 '직곶(職串)'이 등장하며, 각각 상직·중직·하직 등으로 나뉘었다. 하직은 다시 상·중·하로 세분되었는데, 이러한 구분에 따라 지명이 유래된 것으로 추정된다.

시흥시 중심부에 위치하며, 남쪽으로는 범배산 자락이, 서북쪽으로는 낮은 매봉이 자리 잡고 있다. 동쪽으로는 넓은 호조벌이 펼쳐져 있으며, 그 사이를 보통천이 흐른다. 동쪽으로는 금이동, 서쪽으로는 하중동, 북쪽으로는 도창동, 남쪽으로는 광석동과 접한다. 시흥고등학교와 태평아파트 남쪽으로 제3경인고속화도로가 지난다. 연성 택지 지구 개발로 아파트 단지와 다세대 주택들이 들어서면서 도시화되었다. 연성중학교와 시흥고등학교가 이곳에 있다. 매봉에는 경기도 기념물 제87호인 강희맹 선생 묘 및 신도비가 있으며, 묘역 아래에는 재실인 연성재가 있어 다례제를 비롯한 문화 프로그램이 진행되기도 한다. 동북쪽에는 수령 400여 년 된 느티나무가 시흥시 보호수로 지정되어 있다. 하상공원에는 도서관 기능과 주민 자치 문화 활동 공간을 겸하는 맹꽁이책방이 있다.

2.4.4. 자연 마을

하지골: 조선시대 학자 강희맹 선생이 1463년(세조 9) 중국에서 가져온 연꽃 씨를 이 마을에 심었다고 하여 연꽃 '하(荷)' 자와 못 '지(池)' 자를 따서 '하지골'이라 불렸다는 설이 있다. 다른 설로는 조선 전기에 바닷물이 들어왔을 때 뾰족하게 내민 땅(곶)에 강희맹의 묘를 썼다고 하여 '직곶'이라 불리다 후대에 '하직'으로 변했다는 이야기도 전해진다.
요골: 하상동의 또 다른 자연 마을이다.

하지골과 요골 모두 연성 택지 지구 개발로 인해 예전의 모습은 많이 사라졌다.
