인도아리아인(Indo-aryan peoples)은 인도유럽어족 중에서 인도이란어파의 한 분파인 인도아리아어군 언어를 사용하는 사람을 의미한다.

2. 상세

카스피해 동부 초원지대에서 남하하여 이란 일대나 인도 아대륙에 정착한 아리아인들의 후손으로, 청동기 반농반목, 반유목민이었던 이들의 조상들은 말이 끄는 수레를 타고 이동하다가 비옥한 장소를 찾으면 곡물을 파종하고 정착했으며, 인구가 늘어나면 다시 무리가 수레를 타고 이동하는 것을 반복하면서 거주 영역을 넓혀나갔다. 오늘날에는 주로 인도, 파키스탄, 네팔, 스리랑카, 방글라데시, 몰디브, 모리셔스, 세이셸, 피지에 거주하고 있다. 일부는 부탄, 신장 위구르 자치구, 말레이시아, 미얀마 라카인주에 거주하기도 한다.

인도의 민족을 설명할 때 아리아인이라고 칭하기도 하지만 아리아인은 이란계 민족, 누리스탄인도 포함되기 때문에 정확한 설명이 아니다. 인도인과 인도아리아인의 차이점은 전자는 인도에 거주하는 사람이나 인도 문화권 사람을 의미한다면 후자는 인도아리아어군 언어를 모어로 구사하는 사람을 의미한다.

아리아계 민족은 피부가 밝고 코가 높으며 드라비다계 민족은 피부가 어둡고 비교적 코가 뭉툭하다. 서북쪽으로 갈수록 피부가 밝고 동남쪽으로 갈수록 피부가 어두워진다. 실제로 아리아계 민족 중에서 동쪽에 거주하는 오디아인, 벵골인, 로힝야족은 드라비다인처럼 피부색이 어두우며 서쪽에 거주하는 카슈미르인, 펀자브인은 이란인처럼 피부색이 밝다.

인도 동북부의 아삼인, 오디아인, 평원 시킴인이나 벵골인들은 티베트버마어파계 제민족이나 오스트로아시아어족 계통인 문다인 같은 동아시아인과의 혼혈로 인해 유라시안로서의 특징이 있다.

주로 인도 공화국에 대략 9억 1100만 명 정도[2]가 거주하며 파키스탄엔 1억 7000만 명, 방글라데시엔 1억 6000만 명이 거주한다. 그중에서 힌두스탄인이 대략 3억 2900명으로 중국 한족 다음으로 2위이다.

한국에서는 파키스탄인, 방글라데시인, 스리랑카인, 네팔인 노동자는 보기 쉬워도 인도인들은 보기 좀 어려운데[3], 인도인들이 주로 진출하는 곳은 문화적으로 비슷한 중동이나 동남아시아, 언어적으로 어느 정도 접점이 있는 유럽(특히 영어가 공용어인 영국과 아일랜드)과 호주, 뉴질랜드, 미국, 캐나다 등 영미권과 중남미이기 때문이다. 애당초 동아시아권은 남아시아, 동남아시아, 중동, 유럽과 달리 문화적으로나 언어적으로나 인도 문화권과는 접점이 없고[4], 거리도 가깝지 않으니 오는 사람이 상대적으로 적을 수밖에 없다.[5] 힌두교인들은 바다 밖으로 나가면 카스트를 잃기 때문에 밖으로 나가지 않는다고 종교적 이유를 거론하는데 당연히 말도 안 되는 소리일 뿐이다. 한국인들이 청학동마을 사람 등을 제외하고는 유교의 가르침을 일일이 다 지키고 사는 게 아닌 것처럼 인도인들도 웬만한 브라만 카스트 힌두교 원리주의자가 아닌 바에야 힌두교의 가르침을 모두 지키고 사는 건 당연히 아니다. 동아시아로 잘 오지 않을 뿐이지, 애초에 해외에 진출한 인도인만 해도 3천만 명이 넘는다. 규모로는 5천만 명에 달하는 화교 다음으로 많다.
