2. 특징

다음 앨범인 (What's The Story) Morning Glory?가 비틀즈를 비롯한 고전 로큰롤에 영향을 많이 받았다면, 이 앨범은 매드체스터의 영향이 아주 강하게 반영된 음반이다. 사운드적으로 정돈되지 않은 날 것의 느낌이 강하여, 보통 인디 록, 펑크 록으로 분류된다. 슈게이즈의 영향이 느껴지는 노이지한 기타 사운드 또한 이후 앨범들과 구분되는 특징.

'Supersonic', 'Shakermaker', 'Live Forever' 등의 싱글이 연달아 흥행한 다음 이 앨범이 발매되었는데, 1994년 발매 당시 영국에서 가장 많이 팔린 데뷔 앨범이라는 기록을 얻었으며, 후에 이 기록은 만 18살에 데뷔한 괴물 신인 악틱 몽키즈의 2006년 데뷔 앨범 Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not에 의해 깨지게 된다.

90년대 초반 건설회사에서 노가다를 뛰며 일하던 노엘 갤러거가 파이프에 발을 깔려 다치면서, 창고에서 덜 험한 일을 하는 동안 수많은 곡들을 작곡했는데, 그 정수가 이 앨범에 수록되어 있다. 그래서 노엘은 그 창고를 'Hit Hut(대박창고)'라고 불렀다.

앨범을 녹음하기 전에 스코틀랜드의 어느 클럽에서 오프닝 공연을 하던 중 마침 그곳에 와서 공연을 보고 있었던 크리에이션 사장인 앨런 맥기가 그들을 맘에 들어 했고 결국 나중에 앨범 계약까지 체결을 하였다. 그는 이 앨범을 녹음하는 중에 갤러거 형제들의 특이한 성격에 의해 빡돈 적이 한두 번이 아니었으나, 다행히 마이 블러디 밸런타인이라는 더 특이하던 독종을 3년 간이나 상대한 터라 단련되어 있었다.[1] 갤러거 형제도 앨런 맥기가 인내심을 가지고 자신들한테 기회를 준 것에 항상 존경심을 표한다.

CD 부클릿엔 가사가 적혀있지 않지만 LP에는 적혀있다. LP판에는 Sad Song이라는 트랙 하나가 더 들어있는데, CD와 달리 LP에서는 트랙 하나짜리 자리가 비는 바람에 땜빵용으로 노엘이 급조한 곡이 바로 이 곡이다. 일본판에는 Sad Song과 Cloudburst가 보너스 트랙으로 수록되어 있다.

앨범 커버의 와인은 블랙커런트 쥬스라 한다. 또한 노엘이 들고 있는 기타는 에피폰 EJ-200, 창가 쪽 기타는 에피폰 리비에라이다.

2014년 5월 19일, 앨범 발매 20주년 기념으로 리마스터되어 재발매가 이루어졌다. 3LP+3CD박스셋, 3CD디지팩, 1CD쥬얼판으로 나뉘어 발매되었다. 그리고 하이 레졸루션 오디오로도 공개되었는데 스펙은 24Bit/44.1kHz로 되어 있으며 딜럭스 판에는 상기 모든 것이 다 들어있다.

처음 작업 때는 라이브의 느낌을 살리는 방향으로 녹음을 시도했다. 그러나 막상 작업 때 원하던 사운드가 나오지 않았고, 미진한 결과물이 이어졌다. 멤버들도 지쳐 ‘그냥 이대로 대충하고 2집부터는 제대로 만들자’라는 말까지 나왔다고 한다.[2] 결국 사운드를 잡기 위해 프로듀서 마크 코일[3]과 같이 쏘밀즈 스튜디오에서 다시 녹음 작업을 하였다. 한 곡당 3번 연주하고 녹음해서 제작하는 방식으로 했는데 마크 코일은 이대로면 3일이면 되겠다고 짐작했으나 믹싱 작업을 해보니 역시나 사운드가 별로였다고 한다.

결국 마크 코일도 도저히 방법이 없다고 판단해 포기한 뒤, 어쩔 수 없이 녹음된 테이프를 크리에이션 레코드의 사장 앨런 맥기에게 가져다 들려줬더니 맥기 역시 실망하는 것은 당연지사였다.[4] 결국 이 폐기물에 가까운 마스터 테이프는 프로듀서 오웬 모리스에게 넘어갔는데,[5] 오웬 모리스가 딱 1곡을 임시로 믹싱해서 들려줬더니 노엘은 엄청난 사운드에 감동하며 "이 사운드면 되겠어!" 하며 그제서야 만족했다. 사실 이 비결은 새로 도입한 믹싱 장비가 노이즈 없이 음압을 두 배로 올릴 수 있었기 때문에 가능했던 것.[6] 덕분에 우여곡절을 거치며 모든 트랙을 믹싱한 후 그제서야 1집 앨범을 발매하게 되었다고 한다.

참고로 이런 사운드에 대한 고심은 결국 3집 앨범 Be Here Now에서 재발하였고 오웬 모리스마저 손들게 만들었다.

2024년, 리암 갤러거가 본헤드와 함께 DM 30주년 기념 LGDM 투어를 진행하였다. Supersonic 싱글 B사이드의 I Will Believe, 데모 버전의 Lock All The Doors[7]와 단 한 번도 부른 적 없던 'Half the World Away'까지 셋리스트에 포함됐다는 점이 인상적.

그리고 2024년 9월 오아시스의 재결합 소식과 함께 앨범의 30주년이 겹쳐 영국 오피셜 차트와 빌보드 차트 모두 다시 한번 1위에 오르는 저력을 보여주었으며, 투어 소식에 맞춰 갤러거 형제가 광팬이기로 유명한 축구 클럽 맨체스터 시티 FC는 2024/25 시즌의 4번째 유니폼으로 노엘 갤러거가 디자인에 참여한 "Definitely City" 유니폼을 출시하였다. 유니폼은 한국시간 9월 19일 새벽에 있을 맨체스터 시티와 FC 인테르나치오날레 밀라노의 UEFA 챔피언스 리그 리그 페이즈 1라운드 홈경기에 선수들이 착용할 예정이며, 이후 유럽 대항전 원정경기에 자주 쓰일 것으로 보인다.

형제 간의 갈등은 오아시스의 최고의 순간들을 만들어냈고, 적어도 초기에는 서로를 참을 수 없었음에도 양측 모두 상황을 이해하는 듯했다. 94년 한 인터뷰에서 리암은 노엘을 언급하며 단호하게 말했다. [1] 이 밴드의 리더인 케빈 실즈는 사운드에 극단적으로 집착하는 괴팍한 완벽주의자인데, 극단적인 예시로 이 양반은 기타 이펙터만 수십 개를 연결해대면서 수록곡 인트로를 만드는 데만 믹싱을 수백 번을 갈아엎는 등, 앨범 녹음만큼은 초고속이었던 오아시스와는 정반대로 "돈 먹는 하마" 그 자체였다. 결국 마블발은 엄청난 돈을 써서 앨범을 만드는 2년간 크리에이션의 재정 상태를 혼자서 개박살내놓고 결국 쫓겨나기에 이른다. 물론 그렇게 해서 나온 앨범인 loveless는 90년대 최고의 앨범 중 하나라는 찬사를 받긴 했다만, 음악성은 좋았다고 두둔을 해주기엔, 너무나도 많은 돈이 들었던 것. 그리고 여담으로 케빈 쉴즈는, 허나 이 앨범이 음반 제작사를 아주 파산 직전으로까지 몰고 갔다는 썰은 사실이 아니라며 부인했다.[2] 사실 이렇게 될 수밖에 없었던 이유는 간단한데, 애초에 오아시스라는 밴드에게 앨범을 프로듀싱 할 수 있을만한 음악적 역량이 전무했기 때문이다. 음반 제작 경험은커녕 이 당시 오아시스의 경력이라곤 연습실에서 자기들이 쓴 곡을 합주한 것과 작은 클럽에서 공연한 것이 전부였는데, 높은 수준의 음악 교육을 받은 적 없는 그들이 음악의 디테일에 관여하고 음향 장비들을 만져가며 사운드를 구축해나갈 수 있을 리가 만무하다. 모든 노래를 작곡하였고 오아시스 이전에 밴드 로디 경험까지 있었던 노엘조차 가장 기본이라고 할 수 있는 기타와 앰프에 대해서도 지식이 거의 없는 수준이었고, 최고점을 찍었던 넵워스 공연을 오른 순간까지도 무대에서 기타 이펙터라고는 고작 딜레이 페달 하나만을 썼을 정도로 심도 있는 사운드와는 거리가 멀었다.[3] 오아시스의 사운드를 잘 이해한다고 생각했기 때문이다.[4] 당시 리암은 밴드를 때려치고 싶은 충동을 격렬하게 느꼈다고 한다. 그도 그럴 것이 악기의 사운드들은 하나같이 혐오스러울정도로 별로였으나 리암의 목소리 하나만큼은 96년도 전성기 시절의 목소리랑 같은 사람인가 싶을 정도로 훨씬 맑고 청아한 미성이었어서 "천사의 목소리"라는 평을 들었으나 별로인 악기 시운드들과 맞물여서 혼자만 제대로 들리는 튀는 보컬, 제대로 연주된 건지도 분간이 안 가는 조악한 악기 사운드 이 둘의 조화가 심각하게 안 맞았다.[5] 조니 마의 사운드 엔지니어였던 인물이다. 달리 아는 사람이 없어서 그에게 맡겨졌다고 한다.[6] 그 덕분에 많은 스튜디오에서 본격적으로 음압을 올리는 대 음압 전쟁의 시대가 도래했다. 다만 이 앨범 발매 당시엔 논란이 되지 않았고, 1999년에 발매된 레드 핫 칠리 페퍼스의 Californication부터 본격적으로 논란이 되었다. 참고로 이 경험이 정말 인상 깊었는지 오아시스와 갤러거 형제는 라우드니스 워 현상이 매우 심각한 뮤지션으로도 악명 높다.[7] 정식 버전은 NGHFB의 2집 앨범 Chasing Yesterday의 4번 트랙으로 들을 수 있다.[8] 빌보드 200 최고 58위, 차트인 22주.[9] 어린이용 클레이의 유명 브랜드 이름.[10] 소화제의 한 종류.
