1. 개요

1968년 10월 16일에 발매된 지미 헨드릭스 익스피리언스의 정규 3집.

2. 특징

더블 앨범으로, 지미 헨드릭스 익스피리언스의 앨범 중 지미 헨드릭스가 직접 프로듀싱한 유일한 앨범이다. 1967년 7월부터 1968년 1월까지 녹음을 진행했으며 같은 해 4월에 뉴욕에 새로 문을 연 레코드 플랜트 스튜디오에서 프로듀서 겸 엔지니어인 에디 크레이머와 녹음을 끝마쳤다.

녹음 과정에서 헨드릭스의 완벽주의는 극에 달했는데, 일례로 'Gypsy Eyes'는 무려 50번의 정도의 테이크를 거쳤다. 이러한 반복 녹음은 프로듀서 채스 챈들러를 지치게 만들었으며, 이 와중에 헨드릭스가 스튜디오에 본인의 지인들을 잔뜩 데려와서 스튜디오 내부가 녹음을 하는 건지 파티를 하는 건지 모르는 시장판이 되어서 거의 좌절 수준에 이르렀다고 한다.

또한 베이시스트 노엘 레딩은 자신의 밴드인 '팻 매트리스(Fat Mattress)'를 결성한 이후 앨범 녹음에 참여하는 것이 어려워졌고, 결국 헨드릭스가 대부분의 베이스 연주를 도맡았다. 헨드릭스는 제퍼슨 에어플레인의 잭 캐새디와 트래픽의 스티브 윈우드를 포함한 다른 세션 뮤지션들을 초빙하여 베이스와 오르간 등의 악기를 녹음하기도 하였다.

3. 앨범 커버

미국반 커버는 런던 캠던에 위치한 새빌 극장[1]에서 연주하고 있는 헨드릭스의 모습을 칼 페리스가 찍은 사진이다. 헨드릭스는 린다 이스트먼이 센트럴 파크 이상한 나라의 앨리스 조각상 앞에서 찍은 밴드 멤버와 어린이들 사진을 기반으로 한 그림을 쓰자고 주장했으나 리프라이즈 레코드는 이를 무시했다.[2]

영국반 커버는 데이비드 몽고메리가 19명의 나체 여성들을 찍은 사진을 사용한 것이다. 헨드릭스는 처음에 이 커버를 불쾌하게 여겼으나, 나중에는 마음에 들어 했다.

대중음악 역사상 가장 위대한 더블 앨범 중 하나로 꼽히며, Are You Experienced와 마찬가지로 사이키델릭 및 애시드 록과 블루스 록 역사상 가장 높은 평가를 받는 앨범 중 하나이다.

발매 당시에는 엇갈리는 평가를 받았다. All Along the Watchtower나 Voodoo Child (Slight Return) 등 몇몇 수록곡은 확실히 극찬을 받았지만 앨범의 전체적인 완성도는 부족하다는 평가도 있었다. 그러나 현재는 재평가되어 지미 헨드릭스의 앨범 중 최고의 평가를 받는 Are You Experienced에 꿀리지 않는 굉장한 명반으로 간주되며, 헨드릭스의 팬들 중에서는 이 앨범을 최고의 음반으로 보는 사람도 많다.

헨드릭스의 기타 연주력이 정점을 보여준 앨범으로, All Along the Watchtower나 Come On (Let the Good Times Roll) 등의 커버곡에서는 원곡을 잊게 할 만큼의 훌륭한 재해석력이 돋보인다. 실제로 All Along the Watchtower의 원작자인 밥 딜런은 이 곡은 완전히 헨드릭스의 작품이 되었다고 극찬하였으며, 헨드릭스가 그의 다른 곡을 커버하지 않은 것을 아쉬워하기까지 하였다. 수록곡들에 들어간 백마스킹, 코러스 효과, 에코 및 플랜징 등 이런저런 효과들도 이후의 록 음악에 끼친 영향이 크다고 평가받는다.

상업적으로도 큰 성공을 거두어 지미 헨드릭스 익스피리언스의 앨범 중에서 유일하게 빌보드 200 1위에 올랐다. 영국 앨범 차트에서는 6위에 올랐으며, 리드 싱글 All Along the Watchtower는 빌보드 핫 100 차트 20위에 올라 헨드릭스의 싱글 중에서 가장 높은 순위에 오른 싱글이 되었다.

5. 트랙리스트

5.1. Side A

도입부에 해당하는 두 곡과 전형적인 락 싱글인 세 번째 곡을 지나 15분이 넘는 슬로우 블루스 넘버인 <Voodoo Chile>로 이어진다. 사실상 마지막 곡의 비중이 대부분이라고 할 수 있다.

5.1.1. ... And the Gods Made Love

효과음으로만 이루어진 곡.
영국반에서는 'And the Gods Made Love'으로 표기되었다.

5.1.2. Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland)

헨드릭스가 자신을 따르는 여자들을 위해 만들어준 곡이다.

5.1.3. Crosstown Traffic

영국반에서는 'Cross Town Traffic'으로 표기되었다.

5.1.4. Voodoo Chile

Voodoo Child (Slight Return)의 원래 버전이다. 제퍼슨 에어플레인의 잭 캐새디가 베이스로, 트래픽의 스티브 윈우드가 하몬드 오르간으로 참여했다.
15분 05초에 이르는 대곡으로, 지미 헨드릭스가 남긴 스튜디오 녹음 중 가장 길다.
스튜디오 즉흥 잼 세션같이 들리지만 헨드릭스 자신은 미리 준비하고 다듬어온 곡이라고 하며, 당일 녹음도 여러 번에 걸쳐 이루어졌다. 라이브 느낌을 주기 위해 관객들의 박수와 함성을 나중에 추가 녹음했다고 한다.
'Chile'이라는 표기는 헨드릭스가 Child의 'd' 발음을 거의 하지 않는 점을 반영한 것이다.

5.2. Side B

Side D와 함께 전형적인 락 넘버들로 이루어진 사이드. 1집만큼이나 스트레이트한 록 사운드가 다섯 곡 내내 이어진다.

5.2.1. Little Miss Strange

노엘 레딩이 만든 곡으로, 이 앨범에서 헨드릭스가 보컬을 맡지 않은 유일한 곡이다.

5.2.2. Long Hot Summer Night

* 블루스 락 뮤지션 알 쿠퍼(Al Kooper)가 피아노를 맡았다.

5.2.3. Come On (Part 1)

원곡은 얼 킹의 곡이다.
영국반에서는 'Come On'으로 표기되었다.

5.2.4. Gypsy Eyes

영국반에서는 'Gipsy Eyes'으로 표기되었다.

5.2.5. Burning of the Midnight Lamp

1967년에 싱글로 먼저 발매된 곡이다.
영국반에서는 'The Burning of the Midnight Lamp'으로 표기되었다.

5.3. Side C

가장 실험적인 사이드. 세 곡 중 평범한 구성으로 이루어진 것은 하나도 없으며 보컬도 별로 들려오지 않는다. 앨범 전체에 걸쳐 헨드릭스의 실험성이 가장 돋보이는 부분이다.

5.3.1. Rainy Day, Dream Away

뒤의 곡 <Still Raining, Still Dreaming>과 함께 여러 세션맨이 참여한 곡이다.(두 곡의 연주진이 동일하다.) 오르간은 Mike Finnigan, 호른은 Freddie Smith, 콩가는 Larry Faucette, 드럼은 버디 마일즈(Buddy Miles)가 맡았다.
버디 마일즈는 이 앨범을 끝으로 익스프리언스가 해체된 후 지미 헨드릭스가 새로 결성한 '밴드 오브 집시스'의 드러머로 합류하게 된다.

5.3.2. 1983....(A Merman I Should Turn to Be)

스티브 윈우드와 같은 트래픽의 멤버였던 크리스 우드가 플륫을 맡았다.
영국반에서는 '1983... (A Merman I Should Turn to Be)'으로 표기되었다.

5.3.3. Moon, Turn the Tides....Gently Gently Away

효과음으로만 이루어진 곡.
영국반에서는 'Moon, Turn the Tides... Gently Gently Away'으로 표기되었다.

5.4. Side D

Side C의 실험적 연주들을 지나 다시 Side B와 같은 전형적 락 넘버들로 돌아오는 사이드. Side C와의 가교 역할을 하는 첫 곡을 지나 강렬한 락 사운드로 앨범을 마무리 짓는다. 특히 마지막 두 곡이 역대급으로 유명하다.

5.4.1. Still Raining, Still Dreaming

<Rainy Day, Dream Away>의 변주 버전으로, 세션진도 동일하다.

원곡은 밥 딜런의 곡이나, 헨드릭스의 리메이크 버전이 더 유명하다.[3] 심지어 딜런도 나중에는 라이브에서 헨드릭스의 버전을 더 많이 불렀다. 그는 헨드릭스가 죽고 나서 자신이 이 노래를 연주할 때마다 어떤 식으로든, 헨드릭스에게 보내는 헌사같다고 말했다.
싱글로 발매되어 영국 차트 5위, 미국 빌보드 20위에 올랐다.

5.4.4. Voodoo Child (Slight Return)

헨드릭스의 대표곡이자 아직도 수많은 아티스트들이 리메이크 하는 곡. 'Voodoo Chile'을 스튜디오에서 즉흥적으로 줄여 만든 곡이다. 원곡과는 다르게 노엘 레딩이 베이스로 참여하고 오르간 파트가 없다.
영국반에서는 'Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)'으로 표기되었다.
헨드릭스 사후 싱글로 발매되어 영국 차트 1위에 올랐다.
프로레슬링 레전드인 헐크 호건이 WCW로 이적해 nWo의 대장이자 헐리우드 호건 기믹으로 활동할 때 메인 테마이기도 했다.

6. 여담

지미 헨드릭스가 설립한 스튜디오인 'Electric Lady Studios'는 이 앨범의 제목에서 이름을 따왔다.
