1. 개요

1987년 발표된 U2의 다섯 번째 앨범. Achtung Baby와 함께 U2 최고의 명반으로 평가받고 있는 앨범이다.

2. 상세

종교적 분위기에 심오한 내용을 담고 있다. 앨범 자체가 유기적으로 구성된 컨셉트 앨범의 성격이 강하다. 하지만 역시 U2답게 이곡도 사회고발적인 내용과 영국의 북아일랜드 탄압에 대한 저항의 메세지를 담은 곡들도 수록되어있다. 미국의 남미에 대한 강제적인 무기판매를 비판하는 노래인 Bullet the Blue Sky와 '신의 나라'이지만 그 이면은 온갖 탄압과 착취와 통제로 가득한 미국 사회를 비판한 In God's Country가 사회고발을 하는 대표적인 곡. 이런 반미적인 성향 덕분에 한국에 처음 수입됐을 때는 Bullet the Blue Sky, Running to Stand Still, Red Hill Mining Town, In God's Country 네 곡이 검열되기도 했다. 한편, Mothers of the Disappeared 또한 아르헨티나의 군사독재에 저항하다 숨진 젊은이들을 기리는 노래다. Red Hill Mining Town은 영연방 내 탄광근무자들의 애환을 썼다. 보통 수록곡 중에 4곡이 금지곡이 되면 국내정발이 안 되는 상황인데 판1면에 3곡 2면에 4곡이란 비율이 맞춰지면서 발매되었다.

이전의 포스트 펑크 사운드에 가스펠, 컨트리, 앰비언트, 사이키델릭, 일렉트로니카, 블루스 등이 결합된 U2 하면 떠오르는 영롱한 사운드를 이전보다 완전체격으로 확실히 구현한 앨범이다. 그 자신도 유명한 앰비언트계 일렉트로닉 키보드 연주자이자 음악가로 유명한 브라이언 이노가 음반을 제작해서, 모든 곡들의 음이 참 신비롭고 엣지의 짤캉거리는 기타음이 아주 잘잡혔다.

여담으로 이 앨범에서 4곡이 싱글 커트되었는데 2번 트랙과 3번 트랙이 빌보드 싱글차트 1위를 했고 1번트랙은 13위를 했으며 7번 트랙은 44위를 했다.

앨범의 제목 때문에 기독교계에서도 메시지에 주목한 앨범이기도 하다. 성결대 윤영훈 교수는 이름에 따라 부여된 불평등이 철폐된 세상이 U2가 바랐던 하나님 나라였다며 이 앨범을 높이 평가했다.링크

전 세계에서 가장 거대한 록 밴드. U2의 이런 위상은 바로 1987년 앨범 'The Joshua Tree'에서부터 시작된 것입니다. 포스트 펑크의 거칠고 날카로운 느낌이 밴드 초기 음악을 지배하는 감성이었다면, 이 앨범엔 가스펠의 영적 분위기와 확장된 사운드, 솔직 담백한 감정이 담겨있습니다. 이는 U2가 더욱 성숙한 다음 단계로 진입했다는 것을 알리는 신호탄이었죠.

상업적으로 변화되어가는 80년대에 록의 원초적 저항 정신을 앰비언트 풍의 일렉트로니카와 포스트 펑크가 결합된 모던 록 사운드, 그리고 아일랜드에서 바라본 시각 등의 새로운 방법론으로 다시 지펴올렸다는 평을 받는 불후의 명반이다. 90년대 얼터너티브열풍이 본격화 되기 전에 헤비메탈의 대안이 어떤 것인지 제시한 앨범으로 U2가 얼터너티브의 시발점이란 평이 이 앨범에서 비롯된다. 이런 상황적 배경으로 인해 당시 U2의 위상은 팝의 황제 마이클 잭슨을 넘볼 상태에 올랐었다 해도 과언이 아니었다.[3]

전 세계적으로 2500만 장 이상의 판매고를 올렸으며, U2는 이 앨범 한 장으로 단숨에 세계적인 밴드로 부상했다.

4.1.4. Bullet the Blue Sky

80년대 엘살바도르 내전에 대한 미국의 강제적인 무기 판매를 비판한 노래이다. 보노가 앨범 작업중이던 86년 당시 내전 중이던 엘살바도르 여행에 느꼈던 것을 기반하여 만들어졌다. 참고로 1987년 당시 한국에서 발매된 앨범에서는 삭제 되어있다.

1980년대 후반 아일랜드를 휩쓸던 헤로인 중독 문제에 관한 곡으로 Bad와 같은 주제를 관통하며 이에 대해 애덤은 Bad part 2라고 말하기도 했다. 보노가 어린 시절을 보냈던 곳과 가깝던 Ballymun Flats에 사는 화자가 헤로인 중독인 자신의 동거녀에 관해 이야기하고 있다.

마거릿 대처가 펼친 채산성이 떨어지는 광산을 전부 정리하는 정책에 반대하며 1984년 영국에서 일어난 광산노동자들의 총파업을 보고 쓴 곡이다. Red Hill Town이라는 가상의 광산촌에서 광산이 폐광되며 일어나는 비극을 그려내며 대처와 영국석탄청을 비판하고 있으며 정치색이 가장 노골적인 곡 중 하나이다.

U2의 전설적인 1985년 라이브 에이드에서 Bad를 공연할 때 보노의 마이크의 선을 정리해주던 스태프, Greg Carrol이 1986년 오토바이 사고로 사망하자 그를 기리기 위해 만들어진 곡이다. 곡은 보노가 그의 장례식에서 느꼈던 생각, 그리고 마오리족 청년 Greg를 처음 만났던 1984년의 어느 날 밤, 그렉이 그를 데려갔던 뉴질랜드 오클랜드의 나무 한 그루 언덕, 마웅가키에키(Maungakiekie)에서의 경험을 바탕으로 쓰여졌으며 동시에 칠레의 운동가이자 싱어송라이터, 빅토르 하라에 대한 존경의 의미도 포함되어있다.

5. 기타

U2 커리어와 록 역사상 최고의 앨범 중 하나라고 칭송받는 앨범인데, 밴드 멤버들은 이 앨범이 u2를 세계적인 밴드로 만들어주자 우리같은 밴드가 이렇게까지 평가를 받아 좋기는 했지만 주변의 모든 것이 급격히 변화하고 너무 많은 주목을 받자 많이 어색하고 부담스러웠다고 한다.
