1. 개요

커스텀 24(Custom 24)는 미국의 악기 및 음향기기 제조사인 PRS에서 1985년에 처음 출시한 일렉트릭 기타이다.

2. 상세

PRS 최초의 양산형 모델[1]로서, 1985년 NAMM Show에서 처음으로 공개되었다. 처음 발매된 이래 현재까지 PRS라는 브랜드를 상징하는 모델로, 높은 인지도와 판매량을 기록하고 있다.

PRS의 대부분 모델들이 그러하듯, 커스텀 24 또한 그 근원을 타고 올라가보면 깁슨 레스폴의 영향을 매우 짙게 받은 흔적을 여럿 발견할 수 있다.[2] 바디 대부분을 마호가니로 만들고, 그 위에 톤 보정용[3]으로 단차를 주어 둥글게 가공한(카브드 탑) 메이플 판재를 접합한 구조를 가지고 있으며, 넥 또한 마호가니 목재에 로즈우드 지판을 결합하였고, 결정적으로 헤드스톡 또한 깁슨의 여타 악기들과 비슷하게 뒤로 꺾인 3x3 방식 헤드스톡을 채용한데다, 픽업 조합 또한 레스폴과 동일하게 2개의 험버커 픽업인 85/15 픽업을 채용한 조합이다.[4] 물론 연장된 24프렛 지판, 파손되기 쉬운 기성 깁슨 스타일 3x3 헤드스톡을 개량한 독자적인 3x3 헤드스톡, 편한 연주를 위한 더블 컷 디자인과 바디 컨투어, 마스터 볼륨/마스터 톤으로 간략화된 조작부, 자체적으로 개발한 트레몰로 브릿지 등 레스폴과 다른 부분들도 여럿 찾아볼 수 있다.

의외로 레스폴을 포함한 기성 일렉트릭 기타들의 영향을 전혀 받지 않은, PRS만의 독자적인 레시피가 들어간 부분도 하나 찾아볼 수 있는데, 바로 스케일(현장)의 길이이다. 커스텀 24의 스케일은 대략 25인치(약 635mm) 가량으로, 이는 레스폴을 포함한 깁슨의 대부분 일렉기타 모델 대부분이 채용한 24.75인치보다 아주 약간 더 길고, 펜더 스타일 일렉트릭 기타 모델 대부분이 채용한 25.5인치보다는 더욱 짧은 길이로, PRS 특유의 톤을 만들어내는 데 일조한다.[5]

1985년 발매된 이래 현재까지도 PRS의 스테디셀러 모델로 절찬리에 판매되고 있는 만큼, 다양한 기타리스트들에 의해 사용되었다. 특히 깁슨 레스폴 특유의 기름지고 쭉쭉 뻗어나가는 사운드를 원하면서도 만들어진지 70년이 더 된 구식 설계에서 나오는 낮은 플레이 편의성과 각종 불편한 부분들에 불만을 느낀 기타리스트들 사이에서 대안으로서 많이 채용되고 있다.

3. 파생 모델

3.1. Custom 24-08

기존 커스텀 24에 좀 더 많은 픽업 조합을 선택할 수 있게 하는 별도 스위치들을 장착한 모델이다. 실제로 정규 커스텀 24 모델과 비교해보면 조작부에 미니 토글 스위치 두 개가 추가된 것을 볼 수 있는데, 이것들을 기존에 이미 달려있던 픽업 포지션 선택 스위치와 적재적소에 조합하여 총 8개의 사운드를 만들어낼 수 있다. 이 미니 토글 스위치들은 각각 픽업 하나에 대응되며, 험버커 픽업을 스플릿하여 싱글 코일 픽업같은 소리를 낼 수 있게 해준다. (Custom 24-08의 픽업 셀렉터 조작법) 구형 모델은 초기 펜더 스트라토캐스터에 사용되었던 것과 같은 3단 블레이드 셀렉터를 채용했으나, 신형 모델들은 깁슨 레스폴에 사용하는 것과 같은 3단 토글 셀렉터를 채택했다.

여담으로 이 모델도 일반 커스텀 24 모델과 마찬가지로 SE 시리즈 커스텀 24-08, S2 시리즈 커스텀 24-08들과 Core 시리즈 커스텀 24-08을 비교해보면 일렉트로닉스 조작부의 마감 방식이 서로 약간 다른 것을 알 수 있다.

3.2. Custom 24 Piezo

커스텀 24에 브릿지 내장형 피에조 픽업을 장착한 모델. 기타 아웃풋 구멍도 피에조 단일 출력, 블랜드 출력을 위해 두 개가 마련되어 있으며, 피에조 픽업 덕에 어쿠스틱 기타와 비슷한 소리를 낼 수 있어 일렉트릭 기타와 어쿠스틱 기타의 경계를 넘나드는 다양한 사운드를 내고자 하는 기타리스트들이 많이 선택하는 편이다.

3.3. Custom 24 "Floyd"

커스텀 24에 플로이드 로즈 브릿지를 장착한 모델. 일반 트레몰로 브릿지, 고정형 브릿지 이상의 튜닝 안정성과 아밍 범위를 확보할 수 있다. 근래에는 플로이드 로즈의 수요 자체가 줄어들어 과거에 비하면 인기가 줄어들었다고는 하나, 여전히 과격한 아밍 주법을 애용하는 연주자들이 특히 많이 선택하는 편이다.

픽업 또한 전용 픽업인 \m/[6] 모델이 장착되어 메탈 등 하이 게인 기타 톤을 요구하는 장르들을 충분히 소화할 수 있는 출력을 내도록 했다.

3.4. CE 24

CE 시리즈에서 생산되는 커스텀 24의 볼트 온 넥 버전. 즉 접착제로 넥과 바디를 접합하여 마감하는 일반 커스텀 24와 달리 이쪽은 넥과 바디를 볼트로 조여서 연결한 구조이다. 셋 인 넥 공정으로 만들어지는 일반 커스텀 24 모델에 비하면 서스테인 면에서 불리하고, 하이프렛 접근성도 떨어지는 편이지만[7] 커스텀 라인과 제일 비슷한 스펙을 비교적 저렴한 가격대로 구입할 수 있고, 특히 기타에 문제가 생겼을 때 리페어 샵에서 셋 인 넥 기타보다 훨씬 저렴한 가격에 서비스를 받을 수 있다는 장점도 있다.[8]

헤드스톡이 어두운 비니어 없이 밝은 메이플 색상이며, 트러스로드 커버에 전통적인 일렉기타 생산 방식[9]을 의미하는 CE가 새겨져 있다. 그 외에도 일반 PRS 모델들과 달리 넥에 메이플을 사용하며, 이는 볼트 온 라인 제품들의 공통 특성이기도 하다.

3.5. SE Standard 24

기준 SE 시리즈에서만 생산되는 모델로, 동일한 모델명의 S2 시리즈 스탠다드 24가 픽가드를 달고 버드 인레이와 같은 장식적인 부분들을 제거하여 '가성비를 챙긴 미국제 악기' 포지션을 가져갔다면, 이쪽은 비교적 수수한 플레인 메이플 탑을 채용하고 보급형 라인업에서 생산하는 등 최대한의 비용 절감을 취한 '염가형 모델' 포지션을 차지하고 있다.[10] 화려한 플레임 메이플 탑 대신 수수한 플레인 메이플 탑 + 마호가니로만 바디를 만들었고, 넥에는 메이플을 채용했기에 Core 시리즈 Custom 24와는 약간 성향이 다른 소리가 난다. 다만 PRS의 상징과도 같은 버드 인레이는 여전히 남겨두어 어느 정도의 화려함은 살린 것이 특징.

앞서 말한 비용 절감의 영향인지, PRS SE 시리즈에서 판매되는 모델들 중 가장 저렴한 가격을 자랑한다.[11] 저렴한 가격에 PRS를 찍먹해보고 싶다면 권할 만한 모델이라는 평이 많다.

[1] 이 모델의 출시 전까지는 대부분의 모델들이 그때 그때 새로 디자인된 커스텀 모델로서 매우 소량만이 출고되었다.[2] 당장 PRS의 설립자인 폴 리드 스미스부터가 레스폴의 개발자이자 1950년대 깁슨의 사장을 지낸 테드 맥카티(Ted McCarty)로부터 직접적인 가르침을 전수받은 인물이다.[3] 마호가니만으로 바디를 만들게 되면 마호가니 특유의 중저음역대가 강조되는 음향학적 성향으로 인해 너무 뭉툭하고 소위 멍청한 소리가 날 수 있으나, 여기에 비교적 밝은 고음역대를 내어주는 메이플을 접합하면 비교적 좋은 밸런스의 사운드를 얻을 수 있다. 자세한 내용은 일렉트릭 기타/목재 및 구조 문서 참조.[4] 2026년 현재 85/15 픽업 세트는 2025년에 출시된 신형 DMO로 장착되어 판매된다. 85/15 픽업은 이전 세대이며, 2025년 제작분부터는 Dynamic Musical Open 픽업이다.[5] 파생 모델들에서는 다른 스케일 길이가 채용되기도 한다.[6] '메탈'이라고 읽는다.[7] 해외 유튜버들의 PRS 모델 별 비교 영상을 보면 알겠지만 본인이 굉장히 예민한 편이 아니라면 체감하지 못할 수준이다. 실제로 해외 유튜브나 커뮤니티의 반응을 살펴보면 우리나라와 달리 CE24에 대한 호평이 굉장히 많은 것을 볼 수 있다[8] 셋 인 넥 방식의 일렉트릭 기타는 넥을 분리하기 까다롭기에 만약 이러한 공정이 요구되는 수리를 받을 시 대부분 수리비가 볼트 온 넥 방식 기타에 비해 더욱 높게 청구된다.[9] 펜더를 비롯하여 대부분의 기타 브랜드가 이 방식을 사용한다[10] SE 라인에서도 메이플 탑이 올라간 커스텀 24 모델을 생산하긴 하나, 플레인 메이플 탑을 먼저 올리고 그 위에 플레임 메이플 비니어를 올리는 방식이라 공정이 약간 다르다.[11] 2023년 4월 뮤직포스 기준, 대략 90만 원 초반에서 100만 원대 초반대에 가격이 형성되어 있다.[12] 엔도스먼트를 PRS로 옮긴 직후부터 커스텀 24 모델을 포함한 다양한 PRS 모델들을 사용하였으며, 이후 시그니처 모델인 실버 스카이가 출시되었다.[13] 뮤직포스를 통해 협찬받은 PRS Core Custom 24 "Floyd" 모델을 사용하였다. 현재는 쉑터의 엔도서로 활동 중이라 사용을 중단한 것으로 보인다.[14] 과거 뮤직포스를 통해 협찬받은 한 대와 본인이 사비로 구입한 한 대까지 총 2대의 PRS Core Custom 24 모델을 사용하였다. 현재는 뮤직포스와의 엔도스먼트 계약이 끝나 한 쪽 악기를 반납하였으며, 뮤직포스 엔도스먼트 해지 직후 국내 악기 총판인 기타샵과의 새 엔도스먼트를 시작하면서 일본의 커스텀 악기 공방인 티즈 기타의 Arc-STD24 Quilt 모델을 사용하고 있다.[15] 염가형 모델인 SE 시리즈 커스텀 24를 사용한다. 전작 주인공처럼 친구 찬스로 유명 브랜드의 고가 악기를 헐값에 구입하진 않았고, 철저하게 학생 수준의 용돈을 모아 구입하였다는 조금 더 현실적인 뒷이야기가 있다.
